Good app locked behind a paywall.
However, the subscription model does not suit me whatsoever and the cost surpasses the usefulness of the app.
I’d pay for a lifetime licence.
Response from developer
Thank you for the kind words about the app, and for being honest about the part that isn't working for you. I want to take it seriously. On the lifetime licence, I really do understand the appeal, but here's the honest reason I don't offer one: a single payment is a one-time moment, while keeping Lyrcs working is a long-term, never-ending cost. Every new iOS and Mac release, every bug fix, every feature, that's ongoing work that doesn't stop after you pay once. A lifetime price can't fund a lifetime of upkeep, and an app funded that way slowly falls apart, which helps no one. The subscription is simply what lets me keep showing up for Lyrcs for years. That said, your point about cost versus usefulness is fair, and you've been with Lyrcs a long time, which I genuinely appreciate. I'd love to make this right for you. Reach out at https://lyrcs.app/help and we can sort something out.
This app has gotten so money hungry
Response from developer
I hear you, and I get the frustration. Here's the honest version: Lyrcs is just me, one independent developer. Keeping it accurate and reliable is constant work, supporting each new iOS release, fixing bugs, and building what people ask for. A tool like this with no way to fund that slowly falls apart, and that helps no one. The subscription is simply what lets me keep showing up for it for the long haul. I take pricing seriously and feedback like yours genuinely informs it. If you've been around a while, I'd like to make it right, so reach out at https://lyrcs.app/help and we can sort something out. Thanks for giving Lyrcs a look either way.
Subscription Service😡
Response from developer
I hear you, and I'm sorry the paywall put you off. I want to be honest about why it's there: Lyrcs isn't a big company, it's just me, one independent developer. Keeping it accurate and reliable is constant work, supporting each new iOS version, fixing bugs, and building what people ask for. A free app with no way to fund that slowly falls apart, and that helps no one. The subscription is simply what lets me keep showing up for Lyrcs for the long haul. And if you'd written anything before uninstalling, don't worry, nothing is lost. Lyrcs saves every song sheet as a plain text file right on your device, so it's still there anytime in the Files app on your phone, even with Lyrcs gone. You own your words, full stop. How I price Lyrcs is something I genuinely wrestle with, and feedback like yours informs it. If you're ever open to talking it through, I'd love to at https://lyrcs.app/help
Can no longer recommend..
Response from developer
I hear you, and I'm sorry this landed the way it did. Let me address the part that worries me most first: your lyrics are never lost or locked away. Lyrcs saves everything as plain text files right on your device, so every song sheet you've written is still openable anytime through the Files app on your phone, even with Lyrcs uninstalled. You own your words, full stop, nothing is held hostage. On the bigger frustration, I want to be honest with you. Lyrcs isn't a big company, it's just me, one independent developer. Keeping it accurate and reliable is constant work: supporting each new iOS version, fixing bugs, and building the features people ask for. A tool like this with no way to fund that work slowly falls apart over time, and that helps no one. The subscription is simply what lets me keep showing up for Lyrcs for the long haul instead of letting it fade. That said, how I price and balance Lyrcs is something I genuinely wrestle with, and feedback like yours is exactly what informs it. I'd really like to talk it through with you, you can start a conversation with me directly at https://lyrcs.app/help. I'd love the chance to change your mind, and to help however I can.
Forcing us to pay after years of being free
Response from developer
Hi there, and thank you for trying Lyrcs! I completely understand the frustration, so let me put your mind at ease about the most important thing: your documents are 100% safe and always yours. Lyrcs saves everything as plain text files right on your device. Nothing is ever locked away. You can open every one of your documents anytime through the Files app on your phone, even without Lyrcs installed. That's one of the things I care most about: you own your lyrics, full stop. As for the change, I hear you. I'm an independent developer, and keeping Lyrcs reliable takes constant work: fixing bugs, supporting new iOS versions, and adding the features people ask for. Without a way to fund that, the app would slowly stop working over time, which helps no one. The goal was never to lock you out, it's to keep Lyrcs alive and getting better for the long haul. I'd genuinely love to help. If you head to https://lyrcs.app/help you can start a conversation with me directly, and I'll do whatever I can to sort things out for you. Thanks again for giving Lyrcs a try.
Losing Written Lyrics
Response from developer
I'm really sorry, losing your lyrics is exactly the thing that should never happen, and I don't blame you for being upset. I'd feel the same way. I want to help, and there may still be a way to get your words back. Because Lyrcs stores everything as plain text files on your device (and in iCloud if you have it on), older versions of a file are often recoverable even when the current one looks empty. A couple of things worth trying right away: 1. Open the Files app, find the file, and check iCloud version history (long-press the file, or tap the ••• menu) to restore an earlier version. 2. If you back up to iCloud or a Mac, the previous text may still be in that backup. If you'll give me a chance, I'd really like to look into this with you directly and figure out exactly what happened so it can't happen to anyone else. Please reach me at https://lyrcs.app/help and I'll personally do everything I can to help recover your songs. Again, I'm sorry. Thank you for telling me, and I hope you'll let me make it right.
So useful!
Response from developer
This absolutely made my day, thank you so much! Children's books are such a wonderful thing to write, and knowing the syllable count and rhyming tools are helping you bring them to life means the world to me. Keeping Lyrcs simple and focused is exactly what I'm going for, so it's lovely to hear that's what you value too. If you ever have an idea or a feature you'd love to see, I'd genuinely like to hear it at https://lyrcs.app/help. Happy writing, and thank you again for choosing Lyrcs!
Greedy Notebook
Companies need to Stop Trying to Be Money Hungry and put out good products. Screw Them and The Pay Walls.
Response from developer
I hear you, and I get the frustration. For what it's worth, Lyrcs isn't a big company chasing money, it's just me, one independent developer, building this on my own. There's no boardroom here, just a person who loves this stuff and is trying to keep the lights on. Lyrcs is also a lot more than a notepad: live syllable counting, rhyme and near-rhyme highlighting, and tools built specifically for writing lyrics. Keeping those working and accurate as iOS changes takes real, ongoing effort, and unfortunately a one-time price just can't fund years of updates and support. And whatever you decide, your work is always yours. Everything is saved as plain text on your device, openable anytime in the Files app, even without Lyrcs. You're never locked out of your own writing. If you ever want to talk it through, I'd honestly welcome it at https://lyrcs.app/help. Thanks for giving Lyrcs a look.
GREAT UI
Response from developer
Thank you so much, this is the kind of review that genuinely keeps me going. I'm thrilled Lyrcs is exactly what you wanted in a lyric tool, and it means a lot that you enjoy it more than the others you've tried. I really appreciate the pricing suggestion too, and you've put it more graciously than most. The honest reason behind a subscription is that keeping Lyrcs accurate and reliable is ongoing work (new iOS versions, bug fixes, new features), and a recurring model is what lets me keep showing up for it long term rather than shipping once and disappearing. That said, pricing is something I think about a lot, and feedback like yours, especially the fairness angle, is exactly what I want to hear, so thank you for sharing it so thoughtfully. If you ever have more ideas or want to talk through anything, I'd love to hear from you at https://lyrcs.app/help. I can't wait to keep growing Lyrcs, and I'm so glad you're along for it. Thank you again!
Pricing is crazy
Response from developer
Hi EugèneJérôme, thank you for taking the time to leave a review with kind words around how good the idea of Lyrcs is; it's taken many years of hard work to get to where it is today 🥹 I hear your concern around the choice for the subscription model for Lyrcs and I hope the following addresses some of it. Given you're in France a yearly subscription would cost you 5 euro a month, an equivalent to a good coffee. That 5 euro goes towards building new features, fixing bugs and responding to customer support. It's understandable to think that once Lyrcs is built, no more development is needed but unfortunately this isn't the case. For example, with every major macOS or iOS update, something in Lyrcs has broken (just recently iOS 18.1 removed the ability to edit files). Developers like myself need to continually invest our time and money into fixing these things, otherwise you're left with a broken app and noone wins. I hope this does provide some justification for the subscription but I am always happy to hear feedback. If you'd like to discuss further, please don't hesitate to contact me on the website: https://lyrcs.app/#contact I would be even happy to provide an extended trial of PRO if you wanted more time to evaluate the PRO features. All the best my friend 🙏
Not working on iPad Mini after updated.
Response from developer
Hi JDubDev, There was a bug in iOS18.1 if that was what you updated to however it is fixed in the 3.9.5 version of Lyrcs. If you’re still experiencing issues please contact through https://lyrcs.app/help All the best!
The best of the best
Response from developer
Wow, thank you, this absolutely made my day! Coming from someone who's used a lot of lyric and poetry apps over the years, "by far the best" is about the highest praise I could hope for. I'm so glad the syllable counting, rhyme matching, and syncing across your devices are all working the way you need them to, that's exactly the experience I'm chasing. If you ever have an idea or something you'd love to see added, I'd genuinely welcome it at https://lyrcs.app/help. Thank you again for the kind words and for being part of Lyrcs, happy writing!
The good, the bad and the ugly.
No other good features to mention.
Price is truly shocking to upgrade.
Great Start…
Response from developer
Hey 28dkwoo! Thanks so much for your feedback, you'll be happy to know I took it very seriously and all these changes are visible in version 3.7.0. 1) The rhyme list has been moved to the right side of the screen. Rhymes can now also appear in real-time. 2) Rhymes can be grouped by the section they're in instead of grouped by the whole file. Not sure if that's exactly what you wanted but it's included anyway. You can always force a highlighted rhyme by having the words be the last in a line. 4) Looser interpretation of rhymes can be achieved through the Near Rhyme feature. In the bottom right of the editor you'll see a button that allows you create them i.e. aim and games. Thanks again for your feedback, it's helped shape Lyrcs into an even better app. If you think it's now worthy of 5 stars please consider a re-review, otherwise don't hesitate to reach out through the website (https://lyrcs.app) to let me know how Lyrcs can help you achieve your needs.
Real Mac App for Writing Lyrics
It uses plain text files, which is amazing, because they're easy to backup and I'm not locked in at all.
On top of it all, the developer is extremely responsive. It's the app I would make, but now I don't have to!
Response from developer
Hey Collin, thank you so much for your review and for reaching out to provide many amazing suggestions. Lyrics has a lot of new features today thanks to your requests! All the best in your lyric writing journey.
A Real Mac App for Writing Lyrics
The only thing I would like to see added is a way to annotate sections and chords that gets ignored for the syllable counting and rhyming.
Looking forward to Verison 3
The rhyme helper isn't very effective yet but I don't plan to use it too much so I don't mind. Another thing I do to help graph rhyme schemes is use superscript numbers to signal where a line ends on the bar-line. Ex: '¹' '²' '³' '⁴' .ect
I just put those in the rhyme search area to easily copy and paste them.
The syllables being on left side is a bit unintuitive to me, I would expect that to be the bar number and I would expect the syllable count to be on the right. I imagine thats something others also felt.
I've proposed the idea to others (really anyone who I believe may take the idea) of a multi syllable rhyme dictionary which would be super useful and would be unique. You could have a community build a multi syllable rhyme dictionary by having people submitting suggestions and their own rhymes (ofc monitoring them). As a paid add-on thats a great idea and the only one of it's kind. There are others working on book multi-syllable rhyming dictionaries but they are doing it completely alone and are very small in size at the moment.
Anyways, I gave the app a 5 star review because I want it to have a chance to improve.
Response from developer
Hey Swim'n Bird, Thank you for the descriptive review! You've mentioned so many good ideas 😍 I will look into all of them. Some of them I'd love a bit more information on so if you had the time, you could reach out through the contact form at https://lyrcs.app#contact and I can pick your brain 😅Hopefully we can talk soon!
Feature Request: Rhyme Identification
2) Option: User defined rhyme proximity detection e.g. if a rhyming word appears within the next N=2 lines the rhyme is marked, otherwise the rhyme is ignored until there's another two rhymes that match the critera
Response from developer
Thanks for taking the time to review and provide those feature requests OpenedEyes 🙏Those are excellent suggestions!1) I will look into this. In the meantime if you have a word that you would like rhymed, a workaround would be to have that word be at the end of the line. 2) I can see how this would be useful when you only want rhymes to be grouped by sections like a verse. I have added rhyme grouping by sections in version 3.7.0. All the best in the lyric writing journey ✨
I need to learn to match syllables to music
Response from developer
Thanks for the honest question, and no need to apologize at all, you're not missing anything obvious. Lyrcs is a lyric-writing tool, so it focuses on the words rather than the music itself. It doesn't map syllables to specific musical notes (it isn't a melody or sheet-music app), and I want to be upfront about that so you're not hunting for a feature that isn't there. What the syllable count and the colors are really for is the rhythm and flow of your lines. The per-line syllable numbers help you keep a consistent meter and fit your words to a melody you already have in mind, and the color coding shows your rhyme patterns at a glance. So the workflow is usually: have your tune or beat, then shape the lyrics so the syllables land naturally on it. If you tell me a bit more about what you're trying to do, I'd genuinely love to help you get the most out of it, or point you in the right direction. You can reach me directly at https://lyrcs.app/help. Thanks for giving Lyrcs a try!
Delightful, Clean, Focused App
Response from developer
Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to write some kind words! It’s encouraging reading reviews like this to know Lyrcs is on the right path of being a simple app to write lyrics and poetry. There are some new features upcoming but if there is something you find is lacking I’m very receptive to hearing and improving Lyrcs (you can reach out on the contact us page on https://lyrcs.app). Good luck in your poetry journey! 💪
