MAF Fitness HR+ App User Reviews

Complete trash!

The MAF method is wonderful. But the earphones and the app are garbage. When I contacted the company, they refuse refund of help.
Stick with a company that knows how to do heart rate monitoring.

Works great out of the box with my iPhone 11

Works as advertised. Heart rate spot on with my Garmin watch. Music plays and sounds good. Voice updates working perfect.

Waste of time and money

After linking with my phone, No sound comes out of the earbuds. HR measures wildly inconsistent over the same workout done on consecutive days - is my heartbeat 203? 85? The app told me both within seconds of each other.

Great idea but a useless product.

Response from developer

Hi, really sorry to hear of your bad experience. Both issues you have had can been solved pretty easily. The sound issue is because they HR+ haven't been paired with your phone. The heart rate accuracy is because the earbuds are not sitting well in your ear so you need to adjust the gels. Reach out to use on burnfat@philmaffetone.com and we can go through in detail. I am confident we can get them working well for you.

Pretty good

I’ve been using the MAF HR+ headphones/app for three weeks now, and have not run into the issues that come up in the other reviews. The app is solidly OK - not super pretty, but definitely functional. I’ve had a few issues with heart rate not be captured correctly (first time - showing a ridiculously high heart rate from the start; both other times - stuck at 72). Both were solved by wiping out my ears and/or wiping off the earbud. The updating process is the only thing that bugs me - the app doesn’t warn you that a firmware update is happening, so you might turn off your headphones during a run and later find out you interrupted an update. And you would only know that if you are specifically looking at the tech info.

So the app is fine. The value of having my heart rate called out in my ears vastly outweighs the slight clunkiness of the app (and, who cares if it’s pretty? I just want it to work, which it does).

App not ready for the public!

I purchased the MAF headphones after listening to multiple interviews by Phil Maffetone, admiring his research and approach to nutrition & fitness. I figured, “if this guy is the pioneer, his product must be the best”. I was wrong. Mainly because the technology of the app is not adequate. The app is essential to the functionality of the earphones and simply would not work. I emailed customer support (whom was helpful), and over a three week period they asked me to troubleshoot various issues that the app was having. It was immensely frustrating and not what I would expect from elite athletic technology. I ended up returning the headphones. The idea is probably good, but not yet ready for mass marketing. Phil Maffetone seems like an amazing guy, but unfortunately his HR headphones aren’t. (at least not yet...)

Nope

If you want quality wireless earbuds, buy quality wireless earbuds.
If you want a HR monitor, get a quality HR monitor.
These are decent wireless earbuds, but the HR monitor does NOT work, no matter the sizing.
The coaching whistle is EXCRUCIATING, I have nerve damage so that’s not useful. Controls are opaque & fussy, non intuitive. Training program is: Slow & steady wins the race, eat keto.
Too runner-centric, though they are working on that. They have a walking program, but I’m just done with it.
Buds have too much wind noise on a bike outside.
Not worth it, to me, as a mostly outdoor varied exerciser, not a runner At All.
Running nuts & techies might find it useful, I am neither.

Review for app and headphones.

I am very pleased with everything about the app. The appearance, functionality, and ease of of set-up.

The headphones were pretty easy to fit and seem to be of decent quality. To be honest, I’m not sure why these aren’t more popular. I was skeptical when I didn’t see a bunch of positive reviews. From what I’ve gathered listening to a bunch of testimonials about MAF, it seems to be the way to go, and it seems like it would be imperative to get these as soon as you start.

Set up problems

I agree, the initial set up to use the app is horrible. I’m hoping customer service can help. It should not be so difficult!

Response from developer

Hi Suzanne, sorry you found the App hard to set up. You are quite right, it shouldn't be difficult. If you can come back to us at burnfat@philmaffetone.com we should be able to set you on the right track. In the meantime we have added a quick start guide to the website here https://philmaffetone.com/earbuds/instructions/ that should help as well.

Waste of money

It doesn’t pair with the Garmin Forerunner 735XT at all! It did pair with my iPhone 12, but It didn’t play my music from my playlist! Highly disappointed in this product as I’m a firm believer in the MAF method. Phil you need to disassociate yourself from bioconnect as they are giving your name a bad reputation with inferior products!

Hi Carl, very sorry that you had issues. The HR+ will work with Garmin watches that support BLE (like the Feenix 6) but in their older models Garmin use a proprietary protocol called Ant+ rather than the industry standard. In regard to the sound issues the HR+ have two channels, one for audio and one for heart rate. The heart rate channel needs to pair with the App and the audio with the phone. It sounds like the audio in your phone hadn't been paired. There is a video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6_0iqKHta8o that shows how to do this.

Skip it

I have tried my best with this and the HR+ earbuds, as I have a lot of respect for Maffetone and his methods. The whole setup is just annoying. The earbuds are inaccurate, and this app is inconsistent at best. For example, with a setting to give me an update every 2 minutes (pace, distance, HR etc), it will just give an update apparently when it feels like it. An update at 4 minutes, then at 10 minutes, then maybe 12 minutes, then 22 minutes. I will be finding a new solution. I gave this a solid month of use, and I’m done. Save yourself a headache and find something else. As far as the HR+, I’ve asked for a refund. I’d do better with the $99 back in my pocket and just going by feel on my runs. It’s a shame, because I think the whole thing could be really good. It feels like they’ve rushed it and used a subpar product to pair with.

Update: I am adding a star, simply because of the customer service from these guys. They worked with me in trying to find a better fit on the earbuds (apparently this was throwing off the reading), unfortunately I have not been able to get it to work well for me. They are going to refund me. Again, not satisfied with the app or earbuds, but customer service is top notch.

Much better

I originally gave this a one star review as the app was buggy and nearly useless. I’m happy to say that the app is working and doing everything I want it to do. Thanks for fixing this.

Headset /MAF training process not really supported

Update - I continue to have problems with the heart rate monitor actually monitoring my heart rate. Today it was saying I had a heart rate of 58 when I was puffing up a hill. I am not THAT fit...and no heart rate alarm?

Update - I’m getting it to work now but only after holding the on switch a very long time to get it to connect. The lights go through red then blue/white and then blue/red and it has to get to the last set of colors before it will connect. Now the heart rate monitor occasionally freezes and I have to take the ear plugs out and put them back in to get it to start up again. Also, I had read about the MAF method as not letting your heart rate too high but there doesn’t seem to be a heart rate alarm...?

It’s a great idea and it seems to monitor my heart rate but all of the audio goes out the iPhone speaker and not the earphones. I guess I wasted my money...

Hi, there is a heart rate zone alarm there but you do need to activate it. Go to the activity button just to the top right of the start and click on it. Select your activity from the list and then select Goal and set it to Heart Rate. The zone will automatically be set to your MAF Heart Rate based on the questions you answered in the set up. With that turned on you will get a warning when you are below or above your MAF Range. If you contact us on burnfat@philmaffetone.com we can walk you through the fitting to get an accurate reading. ####### Hi! Glad you got it connected but sorry you are still having problems. If the heart rate freezes then the sensor (in the left ear) has lost contact. It is really important that the earbuds fit well and are comfortable. There are two videos on "fit" this at the bottom of the page https://philmaffetone.com/earbuds/ There is a heart rate zone alarm but you need to enable it. On the home screen click on the activity just above the start button, select your activity type then select goal and heart rate. Your zone will automatically be set to your MAF180 zone from the information you entered in the survey when you first started the App. ########### If the audio is still coming out of the iPhone then it hasn't been paired. There are two channels in the HR+, one for heart rate and one for sound and both need to pair. There is a short video on the website at the bottom of this page https://philmaffetone.com/earbuds/ that shows how to do it. Hope that helps. Please get in contact via burnfat@philmaffetone.com if you have any further problems.

Great app, if it worked

The app simply does not work. Sometimes I log in, other times it won’t take my password. When I do get in it just won’t work. It will not see my new heart rate monitor and it just hangs till I delete the app..

I’m guessing Maffetone is using high school interns to save money. I’m going back to the Polar app.

Hi! Sorry you have had issues. Just to confirm, are you using the App with the HR+? It is specifically designed for the HR+ so it won't support third party products. If you are using HR+ then it sounds like a pairing problem. There is short video on that at the bottom of this page on our website - https://philmaffetone.com/earbuds/ Please get in contact via burnfat@philmaffetone.com if you have any further problems and I'll help you sort them out.

Can’t register

Have the earbuds, trying to register in the app and keep getting ‘Response Status Code was unacceptable. 500. Couldn’t find anything on this. Pretty unhelpful error message.

Response from developer

Hi Nancy, sorry for the hard to decode error message. That usually indicates that there is a password issue on the account so click on the re-set password option and go through the process to reset and it should work again.

Update

Now that the app has been updated it is working very well for me thus far. Very satisfied with the app. I like the audio information feed.

Same issues others noted and poor ear buds

App does not even hold your height etc. used the ear buds because Phil M. endorsement however that was a mistake they are buggy. This app and the ear buds are not a market ready product and should not be sold. If the company failed then just take the loss don’t dump flawed product on customers.

Not ready for prime time

Love the concept. Unfortunately the app is not as good as the concept. Froze on me today. Tried numerous times to reboot no luck. Very slow on top of that. Can’t enter correct info, sub par support. Trying to work with it but no luck. Will return.
