favorite riichi app

This checks all the boxes for me: it’s portrait orientation; everything is easily legible; play against bots that make reasonably smart moves; option to get hints for discards; shows waits, explains points in detail, etc.; doesn’t have goofy gacha/anime/furries (sorry Kemono) aesthetics.

Some of the UI could be polished, sure, but this one easily blows the others out of the water. My only wish is that other mahjong variants like HKOS, MCR, etc. were available; I’d pay SO much for that!

FAQ

What is Mahjong Demon?

Mahjong Demon is a digital game that allows you to play Mahjong according to Japanese rules. It features a slider for tile selection and discarding, and guides you through forming winning hands and understanding the game's scoring mechanics.

What are the key mechanics in Japanese Mahjong?

Key mechanics include forming four Melds and one Pair to win. The game also incorporates specific rules for "Chi" (taking a discard to complete a sequence), "Pon" (taking a discard to complete a set of three), and "Kan" (taking a discard to complete a set of four). Understanding these and the "Reach" mechanic is crucial for scoring.

Is Mahjong Demon free to play?

Yes, Mahjong Demon is a free application. It does not feature in-app purchases or advertisements, allowing for an uninterrupted gameplay experience.

What are the rules regarding "Lost Hand"?

A "Lost Hand" occurs when you are waiting for a tile to win, but you have already discarded a winning tile yourself. While you cannot win from another player's discard in this state, you can still win by drawing the tile yourself (self-draw).

How do I win in Mahjong Demon?

To win, you must form a valid hand, which typically consists of four Melds and one Pair. You can achieve this by drawing tiles and discarding strategically. The game also requires at least one "hand" (a scoring combination) to win, and you can declare "Reach" to increase your potential score, but this cannot be done if you have called "Chi," "Pon," or "Open Kan."
