About
Learn Hong Kong mahjong from Moo, a tuxedo cat in a karate gi who grew up in San Francisco's Chinatown.
Hong Kong style is played across Asia and in Chinatowns everywhere, and it's catching on fast in San Francisco. Moo will get you ready to sit down at any of those tables.
Never played? Good. Moo starts you at zero and walks you all the way to a full hand at the table. Everything in Mahjong Dojo follows Hong Kong rules: 144 tiles with flowers and seasons, chow, pung and kong, faan scoring, and a minimum faan to win.
THE DOJO: SEVEN BELTS, WHITE TO BLACK
Moo teaches every lesson, and the regulars from the table drop in: Claudia calls pung, Woo the cat chases the bird on the 1 of bamboo, and Eunice objects to everything.
• White belt: the legend of the sparrow game, the three suits, the honors and the bonus tiles
• Yellow belt: chow, pung, kong and the pair, and what a winning hand looks like
• Orange belt: drawing, discarding, and calling a tile
• Green belt: ready hands, and why some waits beat others
• Blue belt: faan, the table minimum, and who pays
• Brown belt: which tile to throw, and how to stay safe
• Black belt: dice, the dealer, rounds and table manners
Every belt ends with a drill, and you earn the belt when you pass.
MORE LESSONS
• Tile reader: real tiles are brush-painted, so every tile is shown in brush style next to the clean printed character
• Tricky brush pairs: the tiles people mix up most, and the one feature that tells them apart
• Winds and seats: why the compass looks backwards at the table, seat wind, round wind and dealer rotation
• Dice and the deal: who deals first, how the wall is built, and where to break it
• Flowers and seasons: which bonus tile belongs to which seat
• Cantonese pronunciation (Jyutping) for every tile and hand, or turn it off
THE RULE BOOK
Every Hong Kong hand in one place, each with an example: chicken hand, all chows, all pungs, mixed and pure one suit, dragons, winds, and limit hands like Thirteen Orphans. Look up how many points a faan count pays, and check table rules like claim priority, kongs, draw games and who pays.
DAILY PUZZLES
Train the skills that win hands:
• Find the wait
• Pick the best discard
• Is it a win?
• Count the faan
Three difficulty levels, a rating that grows as you improve, streaks, and a new daily puzzle every day.
FLASHCARDS THAT REMEMBER
Name the brush-style tile. The tiles you miss come back more often until they stick.
PLAY A REAL GAME
Sit down at the table against three bots, each with its own style: one calls everything, one plays safe, and one chases a single suit and big hands. Chow, pung, kong, flowers, self-draw, a minimum faan, points and a rotating dealer, just like a Hong Kong table. Stuck? Tap Hint and Moo suggests a discard and tells you how close you are to ready.
MADE FOR HONG KONG RULES
Mahjong Dojo teaches Hong Kong (Cantonese) mahjong only, not Riichi, American or Chinese Official rules, so nothing you learn here will confuse you at a Hong Kong table. Tables vary, so you can set your own minimum faan.

1.0.3
October 30, 2026
The tutorial is now taught by the whole cast, the seat wind shows as a word, letter and character, and the bots play at a calmer pace. The ready banner now only counts hands that reach the faan minimum and shows how many faan you have. Sound recovers when your audio output changes.
