About
One philosophy question every morning. Pick a side, then see who stood with you: the thinkers who argued each answer, and how professional philosophers voted when the PhilPapers Survey asked the same thing.
Would you pull the lever to save five? Can you know the sun will rise tomorrow? If your next decision is already settled, are you still to blame for it? There are 365 questions, one for each day of the year. Each comes from a real text by Plato, Zhuangzi, Hume, Kant, Simone de Beauvoir, Derek Parfit or one of more than 200 other thinkers.
Under your answer you get both sides in a line or two, the survey numbers where they exist, and the idea behind the case in a few short paragraphs. In the evening a second question brings it back to your own day, and you can write down your answer.
Your answers place you on five lines: duty or outcomes, reason or experience, fate or freedom, virtue or pleasure, and one about the self. Are you something more than your parts? They also put you on a map of philosophers, from Plato and Hume to Sartre, so you can see who you think like. The map shifts with every answer, and at the end of each week you get a reading of how you moved and who you drew closer to.
Sometimes two of your answers disagree. You would pull the lever, but you wouldn't push the man off the bridge. Marginalia notices, and tells you what philosophers have made of that exact pair.
When one question a day isn't enough, follow a path: seven questions on one problem, in order. Are you free? Who are you? Can you know anything? When is a lie wrong? At the end you see where you came out, and which philosopher stands nearest.
When you have a real decision to make, there are eight methods for working through it, from Epictetus, Seneca, Socrates, Kant, Marcus Aurelius, Nietzsche, Rawls and Aristotle. Each takes a few minutes and a few honest answers.
You can answer from the Home Screen widget or ask Siri for today's question, and get a reminder in the morning, in the evening, or both. There's no account and no ads, and your answers and notes stay on your iPhone.
Today's question is always free, and so is the trolley path. Membership opens every other path to its end and the complete archive, the full readings of your tensions and of each week, every philosopher ranked with the answers that put them there, the answers behind every line of your profile, and all eight methods. You can choose a yearly plan with a 3-day free trial, or a monthly plan.
