What's New in MarginNote 5

5.0.0

MarginNote 5: Templates, Study Tools, and Sync Improvements New: the Scenario Interface, customizable templates, document windows on iPad and Mac, handwritten card annotations, and recall and AI study tools. Sync and data protection improve, with iPhone Duo support. Free upgrade for MarginNote 4 users. Your study sets, notes, and purchased entitlements are retained—no repurchase needed. Scenario Interface & Templates - The Scenario Interface organizes tools around Excerpt, Handwriting, Organize, and Recall. Switch back to the classic MN4 interface (except on iPhone Duo). - Customize toolbars, menus, floating windows, pen boxes, and excerpt colors. Templates support onboarding guides, importing, exporting, and sharing. Copy existing study set settings to a template. - The 3-Mode Sample template preserves the original Immersive mode workflow. Find features and settings with Feature Search (Cmd+Shift+P). Template Gallery - Install Card Practice for filtered question practice, attempt history, and answer corrections; or Reading Vocabulary for offline word lookup and vocabulary cards. - Scenario templates support companion plugins for vocabulary lookup, question practice, and card processing. Home & Material Management - Home now groups Study Sets, Review Card Decks, and Library. Edit categories, pin study sets, and start today's review. - Improved study set covers and document management, including batch add/remove, grouping, and sorting. - New card deck open modes, updated icons, themes, and glass appearance on supported systems. Document & Mind Map Navigation - Pin mind maps and views for quick access in the Scenario Interface (except on Duo). On iPad and Mac, open draggable, resizable document windows when space allows. - Browse documents, TOC, and PDF pages in one panel; use the document spine on iPad and Mac for quick switching and comparison. - Better document search (Cmd+F), excerpt positioning, and comparison controls. New attachment backlinks let handwriting jump to the corresponding page in the main document. Card Handwriting & Review - Annotate a whole-card screenshot with handwriting; annotations are saved as collapsible card comments without changing the PDF. Start blank handwriting on a card, too. - In Study-Set-Style Review, flip a card, then view its related document and mind map. Improved card tags and per-deck maximum review intervals. Recall Mode - In-Situ Occlusion keeps cards in place, while Layer-by-Layer Recall collapses them to titles. Choose what to hide, reveal answers, and track remaining occlusions. Recall settings are saved per study set. AI & Export - Save AI chat results as cards, turn Markdown outlines into mind map branches, or insert selected text into card comments and titles. - More reliable AI Breakdown, AI Table of Contents, and MarginNote Agent, with clearer retry messages. MarginNote Agent requires Max and uses MarginNote credits. Text Condense adds One Sentence, Key Points, and Structure, with on-device AI on iOS/iPadOS/macOS 26+ when Apple Intelligence is enabled and its model is available on a supported device and in a supported region. Cloud AI is billed by the selected service. - New MarginNote CLI: enable the connection in Lab so AI assistants on your computer can read study materials and help organize notes; edits require Max and external AI is billed by its provider. - Mind map PDF export adds Card Flow. Sync, Data Protection & Stability - See sync status on Home and detailed document/note sync progress in Sync Center, with clearer issue explanations. - Manual sync offers protective version history; applying cloud changes also protects local study data, not a full backup of original files. Fixes reduce accidental deletion and overwrite risks and improve recovery.

Poor icloud sync between iPad and Macbook

I am running into loads of issues when starting to use Margin Note 4 on my Macbook. It took a while for the docs in my study set to stop appearing as temporary files and actually become part of the study set. This is now fixed. But now the cards I am creating are not grouping with the earlier cards from the doc and appearing way down on the MindMap where I cannot see them next to the earlier cards. The MindMap loads the different sets of cards for different docs but after I create a new card it suddenly clusters all the cards within the study set together. I LOVE using the app on my iPad, but it needs better suync with Macbook.

Response from developer

Hello! Please open the three-line menu in the top-left corner of the app’s home screen and select “Feedback & Support” to contact us so we can help troubleshoot the issue.

Serious PDF rendering bug on Mac

When I open my PDF in MarginNote, the text sometimes fails to render properly and is replaced by solid green rectangular blocks, The PDF itself is completely normal when opened in other PDF readers, so this appears to be a MarginNote rendering/display issue.

This problem started occurring recently and makes the PDF completely unreadable. Closing and reopening MarginNote sometimes helps, but the issue can recur. Please investigate the PDF rendering engine/GPU or display-scaling issue and provide a permanent fix.

Device: Mac
Issue: PDF text rendered as green blocks/rectangles instead of actual text
Impact: PDF becomes unreadable inside MarginNote

Please fix this rendering bug, as MarginNote is otherwise very useful for studying.

Changing my life as a student

This app has changed how I learn. I used to not be able to use a textbook to learn but now I can. It’s great to be able to learn independently.

Unfortunate

They are leaning so heavily into Ai. Hopefully there will always be a switch to turn the ai option off
