MASA Swallowing Exam User Reviews

Convenient

I love the convenience but the consecutive item scoring selection screens do not fill the whole screen as each one progresses and by the last item it is cut in half. I am familiar with the assessment so I know what I am looking for in the descriptors, but someone less familiar would need to go back to a paper version to read the levels for that item. Is this an iOS 15 issue? Fix this issue and you get a 5!!

Time saver- however

Great app! my only suggestion, at least for the ipad app - could you list the scoring criteria /task description from the manual on a side column for reference on each scoring item?

Practical time saver

Saves a great deal of time for me, visual report is something my patients have appreciated vs just a number. Love having the manual on hand to help promote consistency. Works well, haven’t encountered any problems

Display flaws

This app could be a time saver if you administer the MASA. However, there are a few flaws I’ve found. 1) As you continue through the pages they become progressively cut off, showing only a portion of the page you’re supposed to be on and part of the prior page. 2) If you decide that you want to back up to a previous page to change a score, the app freezes and the ā€˜next’ button doesn’t work, meaning you have to start all over from the beginning. I am running this app on an iPhone X. These flaws along with the high subscription cost do not make this app worthwhile at the time I am writing this review. I do hope the developers will fix these issues and also reconsider the cost.

Response from developer

Thank you for this review and our apologies for the delay in responding. We have now tested this app with iPhones from 6s to 11 and have not experienced any crashes. The back button (<) located in the upper left hand corner of the screen functions well to revise any items without having to restart the exam. Landscape mode has now been disabled to avoid any confusion regarding not being able to see the entire screen. We also have a 'bug reporter' enabled....if you encounter any issues with the app just shake the phone. This action will launch the bug reporter wizard and send us a screenshot and other useful information to help improve this app. We agree completely that this app saves time during clinical evaluations. The app also promotes consistency across clinicians and reduces summary errors. We hope clinicians will continue to use this app and notify us of any issues encountered.

Disappointing

I’m not sure who this app is aimed at because an experienced clinician would not have any use for it and a novice one would not learn from it. Namely, because there is No data to show how the ā€œriskā€ was quantified. You input a self reported parameter into a ā€œcalculatorā€ and it spits out a number without any references. What are they using to determine how ā€œmildā€ risk for aspiration is determined. Maybe future edits will strengthen this tool.
