Milo and the Magpies Review
I downloaded Milo and the Magpies through a recommendation from Rusty Lake, whose games I absolutely love. Because of that, I went in with high expectations—but ultimately, I felt somewhat disappointed.
Positives - I was immediately impressed by the sound design and atmosphere. The music complements the scenery perfectly, and I genuinely loved how immersive it felt. I also enjoyed the level design and discovering secrets after finishing the game, which was a nice extra touch.
Negatives - The biggest issue for me was the lack of puzzles. There’s roughly one puzzle per chapter across 12 chapters. While Rusty Lake makes puzzle games, this felt more like a game with puzzles rather than a true puzzle game.
The puzzles themselves were mostly uneventful and forgettable. Many of them boiled down to tapping the screen in different places. Whenever I picked up an item, the game immediately told me what to do with it, which removed any sense of problem-solving. If I wasn’t tapping randomly, I was either searching for numbers in the background or watching a cutscene.
Constantly having to tap Milo was especially frustrating—it felt like I was tapping my screen for hours. I was rarely engaged unless the story was involved, which I did enjoy, though even that concluded with a very long cutscene.
Overall - Milo and the Magpies isn’t a bad game, but it’s very brief, somewhat frustrating, and lacks engaging gameplay. I’ve played this developer’s other games—my favorite being Mitoza—and this one just didn’t leave much of an impression. When I finished, I didn’t feel proud, happy, or sad; it simply ended too quickly, with too little content, and what content there was felt underwhelming.
I may still play more of this developer’s games in the future—I’m currently playing Milo Christmas, though it seems to have similar issues. I also didn’t love The White Door, but that’s a discussion for another time.

Beautiful, but short
Great game, clever gameplay, moving story, love it. Just waaaay too short. Took 30 minutes to an hour to finish.
After So Many Horror Games, Something Sweet!
First of all, very enjoyable game. Simple yet unique concept. The element that really drew me in was the music. It made the game feel like a Wes Anderson film. Also, ever since I started playing Rusty Lake games, I’ve gained an appreciation for games that utilize hand drawn graphics. Thank you for this beautiful little work of art. Please continue to grace the world with more.

J’ai beaucoup aimé ce jeu doux et calmes, malgré les aventures rocambolesques de Milo le chat gris. J’ai bien aimé quand il danse et sa relation avec les pies. 🤠
Je comprends que certaines personnes aient pu trouver ça court, mais personnellement j’ai trouvé ça suffisant, et cohérent avec un chat qui n’était pas loin de sa maison. 🙂
On a peut-être pris l’habitude de jeux où tout va vite, alors que là pour profiter de ce jeu et de ses détails il faut prendre son temps, ce que j’ai trouvé très agréable !

Cute, but impenetrable
A cute story but almost unplayable without hints and the walk through. Not worth the payoff. Nice music for sure.
Gorgeous
Such a sweet little game, with a level of craftsmanship we don’t see very often on mobile. It’s a bit lumpy in places but that all part of its charm. Hope this is a sign of more small premium games like this.

Lovely graphics
Yes it’s short, and simplistic. But I think it’s rather nice that it’s a game even small children could play without asking for much help. My 6 year old niece completed it in about an hour, and only really needed help twice (For the padlock/box!). But I think the graphics, and music are nice. And the little details, like the hidden things, are a nice touch.

die Idee ist großartig, der Grund für nur drei Sterne ist die extrem schlechte steuerung, obwohl ich das Spiel auf dem ipad gespielt habe. ich konnte es nicht zu ende spielen, da der Laserpen meine Aktivität nicht umsetzen konnte.
Schade fürs Geld. eine Möglichkeit zu überspringen wäre hilfreich gewesen, so ist es dann Abzocke. Die "Hilfe" ist leider auch keine Hilfe

A wonderful game
A really sweet and fun game. It’s a bit short but the puzzles are engaging and original. It’s not like any other puzzle/escape game I’ve played. Much of the puzzling is figuring out what exactly is required, and there was a lot of exploring and interacting with the environment to find the solutions, but it’s all there if you look carefully and try different things. And like every game, once you get a sense of how the dev thinks, it all opens up. Each time I found a solution it was so satisfying, and the stunningly beautiful artwork makes it a pleasure to spend time in this world. The music is also wonderful. Well done, dev! I hope you’re at work on your next game. 😀 Now I have to go play it again to see if I can find more secrets.
