About

Your first draft shouldn’t be ‘precious’. Don’t get it perfect. Just get it down. A first draft can feel enormous. You know the story and where it needs to go. But a scene gets difficult, the middle gets messy, or you start wondering whether any of it is working. milquetoast is built around a simple idea: build momentum through milestones and get the first draft out of your head and into the world. Break your story into small milestones. Write the parts you know. Skip the parts you don't. Leave yourself a note. Mark something to revisit later. Then keep writing. Your job isn't to make every piece perfect. Your job is to get to the end. Write at the level of the moment Imagine you’re writing a story about a guy who kidnaps his boss. Instead of staring at an empty page and wondering how to write an entire chapter, create a milestone: Jack buys kidnapping supplies. Write it. Jack loses his nerve. Write that. Jack brings his childhood friend onboard. Keep moving. Milestones give you a concrete target without forcing you to figure out the entire story first. Draft your way You don't have to outline your story perfectly before you start. Organize your writing into: Act - Chapter - Scene - Milestone - Milestone - Milestone Or don't. For a short story, you might use only milestones. Write milestones directly and worry about structure later. Start at the beginning. Jump ahead to the ending. Write the scene you're excited about. Work backward from something you already know. The structure helps you write—it doesn't tell you how. Keep moving when you get stuck Sometimes you simply don't know what happens next. That's okay. Write what happens: Jack and Bubba kidnap Jack’s boss. Write a rough version. Leave yourself a note. Mark the milestone Revisit. And move on. You might understand what should happen there after you've written another 20,000 words. You don’t need to solve this right now. Don't let one difficult scene hold the entire draft hostage. Come back when you're ready Every milestone can have a note for thoughts, questions, or reminders. Mark milestones for Revisit and find everything you've left for your future self in one place. Not the perfect draft. Not the final draft. The first one. Because you can't revise a story that doesn't exist. Write the scene you know. Skip the scene you don't. Leave yourself a note. Mark it for later. Write the next milestone. Then the next. Keep moving until you reach the end.
