Old subjunctive focused version was better

Devs, selecting individual letters is NOT an acceptable input method for text!! Every smartphone user in the world is an expert at using the KEYBOARD. Picking individual letters from a randomly laid out choices is incredibly frustrating and adds nothing to the learning experience. Either make it typed text or multiple choice of entire words.

Two stars because the good subjunctive content from the old app is still buried in here. But the devs have turned the entire thing into a vibe-coded Duolingo ripoff. Submit the old version as a $10 one-time purchase and I’ll buy it.

Response from developer

Thank you for the honest feedback. We agreed that the letter bank should not be the only input method, so keyboard typing is now back in all Subjunctive game modes. You can now choose whichever input method you prefer. We’ve also expanded the Subjunctive content significantly. In addition to the existing present subjunctive exercises, Modo now includes Advanced Mode with past subjunctive practice and more complex sentence structures. We hope you’ll give the updated version another try.

Just downloaded this app !

So far so good looking forward to additional advanced lessons ( y si ) would be very helpful.
Thanks intermediate learners need this kind of practice Preed

The new modo sucks

I was telling everybody and their brother about Modo and how helpful it is with subjunctive. How it progressively teaches you and is such solid content. I log in the other day to find it gamified, and barely lets you do any subjunctive. If you’re trying to make money, at least keep the content SIMILAR to what it was for the people that found it for that reason. People hate Duolingo for a reason. Worst update I’ve ever seen in my life. I have never been more disappointed by an app. Who thought this was a good idea?

Response from developer

Thank you for sharing this so honestly, and for previously recommending Modo to others. We’re sorry the update made it feel like the subjunctive practice you valued had disappeared. We’ve continued improving the new version based on feedback like yours. Keyboard typing is now back in all Subjunctive game modes. We’ve also expanded the Subjunctive content with Advanced Mode for practicing the past subjunctive through more complex sentence structures. The goal was never to move away from the focused, progressive subjunctive practice that made Modo useful. We hope you’ll give the updated version another try.

I didn’t download this app to be playing a game

I wanna say that this is the worst update to an app a learning app at that that I have ever witnessed in my entire life. I’m trying to figure out a reason to keep this app downloaded on my phone. The original version amazing it works. I was learning from it this thing right here that I put on on the app market it’s not I see no person downloading this to their phone now and find a reason to keep it because it’s almost useless to have. I’m just baffled to believe that a group of people sat down and said let’s take away what they had and give them this, this useless app.

Response from developer

We’re sorry the new version initially felt like a step backwards, especially when the original Modo had been helping you learn. The new Modo is designed to make subjunctive practice more effective. Instead of following the same fixed learning path for every user, the app now adapts the exercises to your level and performance, so you can focus more on what you personally need to improve and progress faster. Based on feedback, we’ve also added more insight into your learning path and progress, so it is clearer what you are practicing and why. Keyboard typing is now back in all Subjunctive game modes, and Advanced Mode adds dedicated past subjunctive practice with more complex sentences. We believe the updated Modo now offers a stronger and more personalized subjunctive learning experience, and we hope you’ll give the latest version another try.

Updated review to match updated app

I originally downloaded this app when it was just focused on the subjunctive. The whole app got updated and no longer focuses on just that. I was halfway down the map and was really learning a lot-was looking forward to finishing the map over time. Well, whatever this now is useless to me and all my subjunctive work seems to be gone. It focuses on lots of different things instead. Unfortunately, it means I uninstalled the app and came back here to update my review, which used to be 5 stars.

Response from developer

Thank you for the honest feedback. I’m really sorry the update felt like such a step back after you had been making progress in the earlier subjunctive-focused version. I completely understand how frustrating it must feel to lose the visible map and the sense of progress you had built up. If the old structure was helping you learn, then seeing that change so much can easily feel like the part of Modo you valued most has disappeared. The subjunctive is still a core part of Modo, but the way it is taught has changed. The new Modo uses adaptive practice that adjusts over time based on your answers, mistakes, and learning patterns, rather than following one fixed map for everyone. I’m sorry we disappointed you with this update. I hope you’ll consider giving the new Modo another chance as we continue improving it, because users like you are exactly who we built it for. - James

Solid and worthwhile

This is one of the few apps I’ve found that focuses specifically on the Spanish subjunctive. If you’re trying to move beyond basic Spanish and get more comfortable using the subjunctive, it’s a helpful tool.

The app does a good job training you to recognize patterns. Although with fairly minimal explanations, you start to pick things up through repetition. It’s also more useful than the standard explanations Spanish learners usually get about when to use the subjunctive. For this alone, the app is worthwhile.

I do have a couple recommendations that I hope the developer would consider.

Even when your answer is clearly correct, a small typing error may still be marked wrong. It would help to allow for more leeway with minor misspellings or give you a chance to confirm your answer.

The app prefers that you write full sentences rather than just the verb form. I understand why it is set up that way, but typing on phones are frustrating and introduce errors that consequently end up affecting your score and moving to the next level.

The timed quizzes also feel unnecessarily stressful. A bit more flexibility with timing would improve the experience.

It would also be helpful to have the option to turn off vosotros forms, especially for those focusing on Latin American Spanish.

Also, I personally would like a full, iPad version.

Overall, it’s a solid app with a clear purpose and real value, especially for intermediate learners working on the subjunctive. With a few refinements, it could be even more effective.

Nice but could improve

App is good for practicing Spanish subjunctive just wished it explained topics more throughly and included audio. Also for people trying to learn Latin American Spanish, please add a way to remove vosotros.

Great for learning subjunctive

This is a great app for memorizing and practicing when to use the subjunctive in Spanish.

This helped!

This app helped me practice the subjunctive in a new and more efficient manner. I am learning the patterns and flow of the subjunctive in a way other quizzes and drills have not accomplished. I paid for the full version and am content with the value.

Three suggestions:
1. The box where you write your answer isn’t large enough to see the whole sentence you type. I often get dinged for typos because I can’t proofread my whole answer. Please expand the box.

2. The email address for support bounced my message. Is there a different email address?

3. I’d like to be able to turn off the vosotros options.

Very helpful

This app has been super helpful in working on the subjunctive. I find the 5 seconds for the unit test questions to be too short and highly stressful, but I love the rest of the app.

Simple and effective!

I really enjoy this app, the repetition is helping to engrain the rules of subjunctive vs indicative in my brain :)

Completely unusable with ads

Cannot exit out of any ads, have to completely close app. If they decide to do an ad before the lesson, there’s no way you can do the lesson, because the ad wont close and if you force restart it, it will just do the exact same thing.

Response from developer

Thank you for reporting this. The current version of Modo no longer contains ads, so this issue has been fully resolved. We hope you’ll give the updated app another try.

The best explanations for subjunctive I’ve ever seen

Over 12 years of learning Spanish both in and out of school, I’ve probably been taught about the subjunctive mood at least 4-5 times. Conjugating it is easy, but understanding WHEN to use it is something I have never fully grasped. This app has the clearest explanations for when and why to use subjunctive that I’ve ever seen, and I actually feel like am LEARNING how to use it for the first time. The interface is clear and easy to use, and the lessons are broken up into perfect chunks to learn and build mastery over time. I appreciate that it’s not so gamified that it feels childish (like another well-known language learning app…) For advanced speakers who struggle with the nuances of subjunctive vs. indicative, this is the perfect way to learn!
