You got words wrong
Response from developer
Hello, thank you for your feedback. You are correct that the literal meaning of “Assalamualaikum” is “peace be upon you.” In the app, we sometimes use a translation based on meaning and everyday usage rather than a word-for-word translation. For many learners, “hello” is the closest practical equivalent because “Assalamualaikum” is commonly used to greet someone, just as “hello” is used in English. “Marhaba” is also a correct way to say hello, but the two expressions are used in slightly different cultural contexts. Our goal is to help learners understand how Darija is naturally spoken, while also introducing the literal meaning and cultural background progressively. We appreciate your comment and will work on making this distinction clearer in the app.
