Scammm

$50 / year for a movie rating service for what. This should be free. At most, one standard price of $2.99.

Poor App

Did not make good recommendations for movies or friends. Tiers are not customizable and follow a nonsensical scale. The same movies are constantly listed/suggested rather than uploading new options. If I scrolled past it and hit refresh, refresh all new movies, not just a few. Royal waste of time.

Fun app!

I never write reviews, but I am loving MoviePal. It’s such a fun and easy way to keep track of movies, rank them, and see what my friends are watching. I especially love the DM feature and FYP, it makes discovering movies and sharing recommendations so much more fun. Such a great app!

Wannabe Letterboxd, but you have to pay for it

The title says it. Why would I pay for a subscription to this when a better version exists for free?
Unless you hate star ratings and prefer letters, this is pointless.

Doomed business model

Advertised as a social media matchup engine and AI recommended by pairing you with other movie lovers with similar ratings for movies. Basic economics teaches us that this is network economies of scale—but early adopters are being charged an insane $30/month. Who would pay that except by accident? So you’re not actually going to meet anyone. If 300 million people were on this and it was a real social network rather than just movies, maybe worth it, but not for first adopters. Not even worth the time to try the free trial because your data is deleted the minute your free trial ends.

Paywall is unfortunate

I got the subscription trial to try it out — I liked it. But, while it's not too expensive, it's not something I'd pay that much for. What is unfortunate is if the trial ends, you loose your account and everything you've saved. I wanted to look at my list, at very least, but it's not possible anymore. I get if the paywall was for being able to share rankings and connect with similar movie fans, but the entire account? There should at least be a free limited version with ads or something, in my opinion. It's 3/5 stars because I recognize that if I want this app, I suppose I should pay for it, but it doesn't seem right to wipe an account after subscription ends. Maybe a free version, however limited, would be a good option. There is plenty of free competition out there.

Misleading and useless App

This was marketed as the Tinder of movie apps, but it's actually a paid app that focuses on ranking movies. It also has a strong emphasis on streaming movies. Well, I don't have a single streaming service; I have over 1200 4K & Blu-Rays, however. Long live physical media!

Made a friend!!

Honestly wasn't expecting to have matches with ppl who also like the movies I do haha

not free

kind of insane to have an app that you can download for FREE but can’t even use without a $60 subscription. waste of time and lowkey shady tbh

Favorite new app

Awesome new app to log movies and shows by tier. Been able to DM other users on the app that have the same taste in movies and shows as me, which has been really cool. Enjoying it so far and found a bunch of movie recs that I had never heard of before. Excited to continue to use it and log my
movies!

Extremely Misleading

Downloaded this along with Letterboxd for movie recommendations and was disappointed. The app charges an absurd amount of money for what is basically just movie rankings, a feature plenty of free apps already offer.

On top of that, most user profiles look like bots with uncanny AI generated profile pictures. The whole app feels like a ghost town and honestly gives off “Dead Internet Theory” vibes.

I’m assuming most of the 5 star reviews are just paid for bots.

Rip Off

They claim to give 3 free days, but on the 3rd day instead of waiting until exactly 72 hrs they charge you in the morning hours so you don’t cancel. Total rip off and really sad definitely not worth the money.

You have to pay a subscription to use it also, it’s AI

Just use letterbox it’s better for the environment and your wallet

not a free app + potential undisclosed ads

all of the ads (undisclosed btw) for this app claim that this is a great letterboxed alternative as it’s so much better because you can send DMs. maybe it is a better app than letterboxd… i will never know because as soon as i tried to give it a try and make an account, i was prompted to start a free trial that would auto renew for $30 a month. mind u, this app is marketed as basically just a movie recommendation (ai?) machine. you can also rank movies in tier lists and “connect with other movie lovers”.

lettterboxd is free. there is an option to pay through patreon for no ads and other premium features but the app is completely usable and enjoyable without a subscription. this app feels like a cash grab rather than and genuine attempt to cater towards and create an app that film and tv lovers have wanted for a long time.

i wanted to genuine give this app a try, however, i will not waste my time or money on an app that pretty much already exists and has a way bigger community. letterboxd definitely isn’t perfect (that’s why i wanted to try this app in the first place after hearing about it in undisclosed ads on instagram!) but at least it’s not shady.

Meh

This all sucks. TikTok was promoting this like it was letterboxd. Its not. No social activity. Lame. Don’t download

Needs More

I’m very new to the app so probably have found everything out quite yet but one thing I’d love is a profile picture to add. Very basic app for movie fans to recommend movies/shows and see others tier listings.

There’s a paywall

Don’t trust any of the reviews or the people recommending this there’s no free option. Stick to letterboxd

Honest review

-Movie ratings are skewed, likely due to the small amount of users.
-Recommendations are ok
-The tier list is more enjoyable to rate than the star rating system
-UI is not but could use improvements
-Feature missing: I’m not interested in a film so it does not get recommended
-Feature missing: Need an easy way to import my movies and ratings
-Feature missing: Need some more stats on my watched movies other than just tier.

I think this app has potential, but I won’t be paying to use it.
