Enjoyable and easy to use format

Could do with some instructions regarding the quiz scoring … what do the colour circles mean?
Quite a lot of missing fungi …. I can’t match all my photos to those on the app.

Review by Evan Bayton

Good general source of elementary to intermediate level. Sensibly does not encourage use as a foraging guide. There is a growing awareness of need for local knowledge for that and the limitations of morphology in identification of what is still a very imperfectly understood life form.
Recommended for general education.

Love the app. Just a little tweak.

I’m learning a lot from 5 different Sunbird Apps including this one. I use the quizzes everyday to learn. One thing I would tweak is the option to eradicate some of the species from the quiz once you have learned them. A lot of them I have fully learned but if I could adjust the quiz so that I was only left with the ones I didn’t know then I could really get to the depths of learning to ID them. I hope they read this. Thanks, Sunbird.

Identify a great App

A fantastic app great pictures. Excellent key for identification, adds another dimension to a walk in the woods fun easy to use well thought out application

Needs a big update! PLEASE READ!

I have only just downloaded this. And there is so much that needs tweaking.

-When i add a sighting i need to be able to choose where i saw the fungi myself, not by using my current location.

- instead of just ‘edible’ and ‘inedible’ you need a poisonous in there and hallucinogenic? Fly agaric is a hallucinogenic... so we need more detail about taste and everything!
AND A DEATH CAP WILL KILL YOU!! so don’t just out it down as poisonous. It should be down as do not go near! And how to tell it is a death cap by its volva etc.
I’ve payed for an app, literally handing you my money, for minimal information. Now you have my money put it into some use and care. I am so frustrated right now. Also where about in england we would fine these etc.
ALSO history about the fungus too!!
God how can you let people pay for this! The more i play around with the app the worse i find it.

- the way to tell the mushroom apart from its imposers? A turkeytail is flexible at any age and all of its poisonous/indelible imposters will just crumble and will be very hard to move around!

-i should be able to add MORE than ONE picture on my sightings? Why can i not.

- more detail about the flavour of the edible mushrooms etc.
For instance you have a turkeytail down as inedible, where as in-fact it is edible, it is just fowl tasting.

-The app should have a button where i can tap the latin name and it will teach me how to pronounce it.

I do not know how you have 4.4*..

It is a very laggy app. I am quite disappointed that i payed £4.
Can you email me with my money back please. This is ridiculous.

Odd life forms

This is fine with just enough information to be interesting.
Keep it up and well done.

Great app but Questionable info

I love the app and the detailed photos and the majority of it's info however, it states certain mushrooms are inedible HOWEVER numerous articles and info states otherwise ie beefsteak fungi: the app states inedible; various other sources state otherwise. Can the app be updated and corrected? Obviously when mushroom picking I'd use various sources of info and not just depend on one but still I'd like an app a little more correct and reassuring rather than questioning everything it says due to one mistake of information

Not enough species really

I recently bought the all UK birds app which is brilliant. This one is a poorer relative I’m afraid. The first mushroom picture I looked at on my phone couldn’t be identified correctly. I don’t have the same confidence in this app. The layout is OK, but not so easy to search. Happy to re-review with more updates to the app. I really want this to work.

Very good guide

I'm a long-standing amateur fungus enthusiast. I have many books and field guides on the subject, and regularly attend fungus forays with professionals.

This app is very good. It has improved over the couple of years I have had it installed, and deserves support. Given that, I trust it to evolve into the definitive guide. It is certainly by far the best I have found for use in the UK.

Pretty good content but poorly designed

While the content is okay, if still incomplete, the app itself is very poorly designed. The navigation is unintuitive, and the search box is very hard to find. It could definitely use a redesign by an experienced app developer. I’d love to see a “Not to be confused with” section for each edible mushroom with hyperlinks to similar varieties that are indelible/poisonous. Also tall, medium and short for selecting mushroom size is too vague - better to offer centimetres.

Helpful!

Useful and handy addition to identification toolkit. Very cautious (even field mushroom say "some sources claim this is edible") So like all fungi ID should be used with other guides/sources. But the really clear and plentiful photos are a big plus. Just needs more species/types to be added now (they are working on this). Already good value for money!

Not mushroom in here!

A great app for a base point to identification, it is not a field guide nor is it meant to be so I am very happy with this purchase. As a bushcraft Instructor I appreciate the detail of the pics accompanied with the explanation but most of all the ability to test yourself using the quiz option. Thank you!

Amazing app

First of all I like the warning about eating wild mushrooms, even though it's a requisite it is refreshing. The pictures names are clear and distinctive and they also have the names in Latin which is a nice touch.

I like that the mushrooms contain more than one view of the fungi. The descriptions are great and it gives you an option to look at them in more detail, it also has an anatomy option which gives the dimensions and other key factors about a certain fungi.

As with all the Pohland &Mullen apps the identification and track your sightings feature is outstanding. This is an amazing app.

Great 🍄

I really enjoy this app. The way it is set up is simple and easy to use, making it great for my family who aren't great with technology. It shows a wide range of fungi families and then within those families pictures and information about the individual mushrooms. I will definitely be recommending this app to friends in the future as its perfect if you're an avid walker and want help when identifying things. Also tells you which mushrooms are poisonous, which is definitely helpful

Great Value For Moey

The app is clean and the user interface is very easy to use. There are a large number of mushrooms included in the app, and I am always able to identify the mushrooms I am looking for.
I recommend this app for anyone who is enthusiastic about these kinds of things or goes on regular walks in the woods. It is an absolutely fabulous app and it is an amazing educational tool. I am loving all of the apps in the id-series, the developers are doing an exceptional job.

Very useful

Has helped me identify some fungi that I've come across, but it must be missing some as I've found some I couldn't be sure of. I'm glad I've got it but it isn't the ultimate reference book yet.

So many warnings about not eating anything.

I find the pictures and descriptions very good, but needs pictures of the many stages that these fungi go through.
There are many warnings about not eating wild fungi, I had hoped to widen our menu from field and horse mushrooms.

The step by step Identification is good, but if you can not find any examples of the fungi in Spore product, it makes the identification difficult.

A waste of money

This app contains just a handful of mushrooms and so lacking in comprehensiveness that much of what can be found simply isn't in it. Furthermore, to state that the parasol mushroom is poisonous is simply wrong. It's edible and delicious. The large puffball is also considered a delicacy, but here the advice is get expert advice. Some describe the Penny Bun boletus mushroom as edible but seek expert advice, apparently. Every autumn you will find the Penny Bun, or Cepe as it is known, in every French market and supermarket for around €25 - €30 a kilo! It's a great delicacy. Sorry, but this app is largely rubbish.

Useful and informative

Excellent app for nature enthusiasts. Helps to identify fungi. Clearly set out. Might be useful to have an electronic method of identification involving digital photographs, but this app does not offer this as yet. What you see is what you get, a most useful and helpful reference tool.

Mushroom ID

Great app helps you understand what you're looking at - very interesting and so much easier than carrying a book around with you
