Forced upgrade

I downloaded this in January of 2024. I went to use it today and it forced an upgrade. In-app purchases have been added, ‘restore’ does not restore anything and it now requires a free trial to even open.

Hi! I’d like to clarify a few points, as the app does not require a subscription or free trial to continue using it. If you installed the app in 2024 and updated to a recent version, an update may be required because the app’s backend has changed significantly since then. The current version supports vocabulary data for many more languages and relies on services that weren’t used by the 2024 version. The subscription screen is for Pro features only and can be closed. You can continue using the free version, including the functionality that was available in 2024, without starting a trial. “Restore Purchases” only restores purchases that were previously made with the Apple ID. If no Pro purchase or subscription was made previously, there is nothing to restore. If you’re unable to close the Pro screen or access the free version, please contact me through the app’s support link and I’ll be happy to investigate so that would be a bug rather than intended behavior. Thanks!

Love it!

I love this app me and my friend are making our own language and love how we can collaborate and work on it together! The app may not have been made for this, but it works quite well for made up-languages!

What happened to the AI generating definitions?

I paid for the premium version so I would have an unlimited amount of requests to generate definitions and sentences. I wish there was a way to turn this feature on and off. Because it is sometimes rather slow. I like the definitions it generates and having two sentences to understand the context better. However, it no longer does either of these things.

Hello sir! Please, check out release 5.0.2. The issue you mentioned should be solved. I have found a reason why some users with premium subscription were unable to get definitions from AI. Please let me know how it goes! Thanks for helping me out to identify the issue!

Personal dictionary

Not sure how to use the quizzes anymore. In the older version I could see them but now I cannot. I also cannot drag the window to make it full screen anymore. There is no scroll bar anymore either to drag down the list which is not good for me because I have a list of 600+ terms.

About other things - just have posted an update - version 4.4.2 - you can now resize the window and I fixes the scroll bar as well. Quizzes issue should be fixed, assuming you got a bug when you completed a quiz with hard words settings and there is not enough hard words left, and you could not change the setting back - this issues specifically is addressed and you can now reset applied filters.

Great app, here’s some suggestions

I love the simplicity of this app. One thing to change is in definition quizzes, the other definitions should come from words of the same type as the word given, so you can’t just cheat by seeing which definition matches the type of word.

Very useful app

I’m very pleased with this app. I can now key in words that I’m not familiar with and test myself with the quiz. So far everything in the app is working well and I’m enjoying it. It’s great that it syncs as well as I have it on another device.

Just got it, already love it

I beg beg beg and plead, add compatibility between users. My friends and I are looking for a shared dictionary app, where we can all have our own dictionaries, and then a large combined overlapping one, the market has NONE. Please 🙏 (our favorite app is TimeTree for combined calendars, we want something like this but for dictionaries)

Hello! Thanks for the suggestion. I guess that I should indeed bring it back. But the definitions should load automatically now, after you typed a word!

Feature requests

Would it be possible to lowercase the words whenever they are added to the list? Some of the definitions I have are proper nouns and that can cause a mixup.

Would it be possible to include wikionary as a source for definitions? The very first word I looked up ‘aby’ says that it wasn’t found. However, it is on wikitionary.

Another example includes “deputable”. It says these are not words

Thank you so much for this review! I definitely have planned some new features, especially import/export from a file. I’m planning to do a separate settings screen where I would put the option to disable autocapitalization. And I’ll sure see what I can do about Wikitionary!

FINALLY

I’ve been looking for something basic and simple like this for over a YEAR. Every app I tried had me swimming through ads on what basically looks like a web page pulled up in internet explorer (Oxford, Webster, Dictionary.com, etc.) just to use the bookmarking feature. Or it was a decent app to use but had a required subscription because of the millions of other fancy features I didn’t need. This little My Dictionary app is SO easy to use and EXACTLY what I was looking for. Just a simple definition search engine that lets me save words. I also LOVE that it lets you enter in your own examples!! This has been so handy since I often forget where I initially read the word, so having a space to log the sentence I saw it in for context is SO INSANELY HELPFUL. All around incredible app, stoked to keep supporting its development, if you like it please send the developer a donation!!

Good app, no export or support

This is a good app that simply does what ’s required, but there is no data export. Should I put potentially years of data gathering into an app that won’t let me get my data back? 95% of the software producers that existed when I first touched a computer no longer exist. Also, no help, no report and the contact (via X/Twitter) is non-responsive when I comment on a thread. Directly messaging requires a paid subscription to X which I don’t want. So… good product, very high risk.

Good app for phone+mac

Phone and mac automatically sync. Easy to add in definitions. Couple things should be fixed: in quiz mode answers do not clear after submitting, when adding multiple examples in a row the text from the previous example does not clear.

Great App

Absolutely love this app. Great to build your vocabulary and practice the use of these words, apart from spelling and meaning another quiz could be added where you can practice the use of these words, no complains or qualms otherwise. Great job kudos to the team!! :)

Need Backups

Love the app, and the ability to customise definitions. One thing bothers me is that there’s so backup feature. If there was an import/export data feature it would feel much more secure to use this app for years.

Thank you for the review! Backup is available now via Settings → Import / Export — you can export your words (and import them back). That should make long-term use feel much safer. Please update to the latest version and try it. Thanks for sticking with the app!

Good app, needs a little tweak though

Couple of annoying little aspects. When I click add example (a second one), the text from the first example is automatically pasted in so you have to got through and delete it all.
Also, one you have pressed return to save the example, there is no way to edit or delete it which is super annoying!
