Good app but missing interests

I like the app but I couldn’t add Battlestar Galactica as my interests since it wasn’t available

Response from developer

Hi Friends, I can add Battlestar to our list of potential interests to add! Were you thinking of the original version from the late 1970's or the reboot from the early 2000's? Note that inside Nearpeer there is a link you can click to send any other suggestions directly to us. We are always adding new ones! Thanks, Maddie, Nearpeer Support

Horrible interface

Won’t let me sign into it after resetting password

Response from developer

Hi Awesomecello, I'm sorry you are having trouble. If you email me at helpdesk@nearpeer.net I can assist you and make sure you have full access again! Maddie, Nearpeer Support

Met all my friends at CSUN on Nearpeer

This app is fantastic - my school, Cal State Northridge, has Nearpeer for all the new students. It’s really cool how I can see and connect with other people who share my interests and hobbies. If your school has it, definitely use it, it is awesome.

Awesome but needs work

The concept is great to meet friends on campus, but it’s not user friendly. I wish it was like instagram where it had a separate icon specifically for messages

Missing Majors

It is helpful, but I find that it doesn’t allow for all majors. My college has a theater major, but Nearpeer says that it isn’t a major. I know that Nearpeer doesn’t see theater as an academic subject, but if a student is using it for their specific college, they should list the college’s majors.

Social bridge to college

Transitioning from a community college to a full university is super scary but I feel like I have a better grasp of the social aspect because of near peer. I was able to connect with people with shared interests or groups with me which was super nice! I really appreciate how it has a separate group chat with transfer students a lot of the time it feels like there isn’t a lot of social spaces or opportunities for transfer students but its nice to have one here. I think near peer can benefit by adding more specific group chats per major. So a college of education chat or a college of business chat so that people can connect with others that share similar majors or career paths! Overall I think near peer is going to help me socially transition to my university!

Too Glitchy

The concept of the app is great; but the app is entirely too glitchy. I was able to use it for about two days and now the app won't even load when I open it. Kinda disappointing because the app had potential.

It does what it says it does

The app gets its job done, it’s just veeery glitchy and takes FOREVER to load. Also it’s been giving me 3 notification for 1 notification. Could be worse.

Buggiest App Ever

It is a great concept but it has too many issues to be enjoyable. I constantly don’t receive notifications after enabling all possible options and I’m not the only one having these issues. Recently I was completely logged and locked out of my account with no messages back from technical support. It’s a very annoying and frustrating app to try and use.

Cool concept, poorly built

This just isn't a very good app. I like the concept, and I think it has a lot of potential, but it's poorly built.

Some things that come to mind:
-Whenever I open a notification, the app is just a frozen white screen and I have to close it out, reopen it, and find whatever the notification was about on my own.
-If I open someone's profile, scroll through, then want to exit I have to go all the way to the top and hit the back arrow. Not a huge issue, just annoying, and most apps will let you swipe to go to the previous page.
-It would be nice if you could search for profiles based on high school and by specific interest (not just by "passion match").
-When you enter your pronouns, it says "not displayed on profile", but they are displayed. Again, not a huge issue, just not sure why it says that if it's not true/there's no way to change that.
-Under groups, if you toggle "sort by newest chat/sort by group name", it doesn't save that change.

Again, I like the concept of the app, I just think it could have been put together better.

Response from developer

Hi ThereWNON, Thanks for taking the time to give us your feedback. We have fixed the misleading text and display of pronouns and we are working on the issues with notifications and sorting. These upgrades should be available soon. Thanks, Maddie helpdesk@nearpeer.net

Really cool concept, just needs some improvements

The app revolves around setting different interests on your profile, and then the app matches you to people with similar interests. This part is amazing, and really great at linking you with other individuals. The main issue, however, is the software of the app:

-Opening the app and loading the Home Screen can take about 10 seconds or so, which makes checking messages somewhat frustrating

-Opening the app after previously having it open occasionally causes it to not load at all, getting stuck on a white screen

-Notifications can be a nightmare, as they can endlessly pop up on a busy groupchat, yet it’s incredibly slow to open the app and check messages

I’d say if the app can be optimized in any way, this would significantly improve the user experience. Again, it’s a great concept, just needs improvement to avoid users resorting to Discord or Instagram to resume contact.

Need some improvement

The overall general concept of the app is great however their are some glitches when sending messages or trying to see notifications. Sometimes the app doesn’t load up. I’ve had to install and reinstall several times which is annoying.

Response from developer

Hi ShayBray, Good news! The latest version of Nearpeer was released on Jan 27, 2024 - just a few days after your rating. We have completely re-designed our messaging system to eliminate lag and glitches. There are also improvements to notifications and all other areas of the tool. We encourage you to give it another try and let us know what you think! Thanks, Maddie helpdesk@nearpeer.net

Great app

It’s super helpful for freshman, transfer students, commuters, and more. I see a lot of students use apps like Instagram to meet other students, but it’s much easier with Nearpeer. It allows you to connect with people specifically in your school using similar interests. These interests range from your field of study to your favorite actor, so there’s lots of opportunity to connect and start a conversation.

Response from developer

Hi Alex, Thanks for your recommendation! We're glad you're enjoying using Nearpeer! Maddie - helpdesk@nearpeer.net

It’s alright

This app needs a lot of work. Super sluggish and glitchy and kicks you out a lot. Very irritating but a super cool idea. With a few minor fixes and improvements this app could have a ton of potential!

Response from developer

Hi BobboBoy15, We've made a number of improvements to Nearpeer this year to improve its performance and reliability. Also, there are many new features. We invite you to give it another try and let us know what you think! Thanks, Maddie helpdesk@nearpeer.net

Smart Concept, Many Bugs, Ideas for Feature Improvements

The idea of Nearpeer is brilliant - often students at colleges will turn to outside apps such as Discord or GroupMe in order to form chat groups to meet people from their clubs, their classes, and so on. However, the actual execution is not so great. The app could be greatly improved by some bug fixes - for example, if I open it by tapping on a push notification the app opens as a blank screen and never loads to show what the push notification said (doesn’t open to the new chat in a group, does not open the the peer who followed me
as a notification said, etc.). It would also be smart to have the feature where students themselves could make groups for tutoring/classes and add their peers to the discussion without having to contact an administrator. The option to have polls within groups, to have a calendar with group-specific events, and for facilitators to upload pictures in the chat would be improvements as well. These would help improve the functionality of the app and provide more of an incentive for students to join.

Hi JellyfishLeila, Thank you so much for these great ideas! I have passed them on to our development team and I look forward to seeing these new features added in the future. The blank screen issue has already been fixed. Thanks, Maddie - helpdesk@nearpeer.net
