Bad control

You can not play well because of bad controls because sometimes it does not respond.

Needs improvement

Nice little retro shooter that's ruined by a horrible control system. I expected better from this developer.

Controls are broken

There are 2 control options, one is mostly automatic, so boring and the other 360 degree control just doesn't work. A real shame as its an excellent looking game. Worth nothing as it is, go buy darius or rtype instead. Icade support would help too.

Wanted to love it

Does so many things right but facepalms on controls. Guys please read a book called Game Feel at your earliest convenience.

Pretty cool

Reading lots of negative reviews about the controls, so I just wanted to comment that if you are planning to play with the iCade, have no worries, the controls are great. Now if you can only use touch controls... thats another story.

Gorgeous Graphics, Soothing Sounds...

... but unfortunately also Crap Controls.
Have uninstalled now cos you just shouldnt have to fight a control system in a game like this.
Its just too easy to slide too far up on the screen and then lose control. Shame. I feel bad for the devs cos a lot of love has obviously gone into this game. Why no relative analogue control method? Pls fix! Pretty pls?

Updated: cudos to the devs for adding a relative analogue control method so quickly! Have added an extra star to my review, but still not quite 5 stars yet as even though these controls are better, they still seem to be lacking in responsiveness, with the ship often taking a while to respond to your commands and often needing to reposition your finger make it work at all.

Really need a relative touch control option

It's a shame that the ship is so hard to control because the rest of the game is really good. Great retro graphics and gameplay, but really hard to enjoy with either of the two current control options.

Nice try, but...

Controls are not great. What's so hard implementing proper relative touch that works?
Boss fights are simplistic and tedious.
Losing upgraded weapon in hard level = return to easy level to grind for power-up points. Yawn, not a great game mechanic.

Come on! R-Type nailed this genre a long, long time ago. This game feels unsatisfying and the controls are just poor.

Almost there!!

Guys you have made such a good game! I really enjoy it but like everyone has said, just keep on trying with those controls. I know u can get it right. Such a good game otherwise.

WTH is with the controls still?

Ok, updating my review since there's now a 2nd 360 degree control choice. I'll admit I can finish the 1st level now but the new control option still doesn't work. It's not responsive and the control center isn't a fixed point. When the ship goes behind your thumb you stuck trying I jump around the screen trying to dodge, see your ship and collect diamonds at the same time. Neither control scheme work well. I think for a touch screen shmup the best you can hope for is near 1:1 finger to ship direction movement. Ship inertia only works if you have a fixed center controller here you can control direction digitally. Try making the 360 controller fixed to the bottom left but add logic to detect relative finger direction. So my finger is in the area and moves up, the ship moves up, when my finger then moves down the ship starts moving down immediately. (not when my finger is at the bottom of the control area) you have a free touch screen trying to control a ship that doesn't care about you sliding too far can not centering properly.

Everything good but the control.

I want to like this game and I enjoy the graphics and simple mechanics. HOWEVER, the controls are not well executed in my opinion, even after the update. Play Darius Burst or any Jeff Minter game to get a feel for proper touch-controls. On-screen D-pads are unnecessary.

Great retro graphics

Great retro graphics but the controls are lacking which makes this game not very playable.

An update to improve the controls will improve my rating

Seems fun but....

I'm having tons of trouble with the controls. 360 movement doesn't always register, the up/down feature feels too restrictive...I really enjoy games that use the auto fire/follow the finger control style. All in all, it sounds fun but suffers from terrible control scheme.

fix the controls please!

Great game, big fan of the developer but the control scheme sadly doesn't work. Please update to be a slider or top half & bottom half tap zones - right now this is preventing people enjoying the game.

It's brilliant otherwise, if the controls can be reworked it's a 5 star review.

Please please listen to the reviews, this isn't just me guys!

Looks fun but Steering controls are no good.

Devs, please add a sliding option on the left side so that the ship flys to my thumb.

Good Shump

Good game, nice retro feel to it, lost a 5 star ratting from me because, movement should have full 4 directions of movement. Also the first boss battle just takes to long done it 10 plus times and I keep getting killed. If the boss just touches you, you dead grrrrr. Else it's fun, cool game.

Suffers from screen controls.

The controls are probably the most difficult thing about the game if you're playing easy mode. The whole right half of the screen is for firing, but the up/down controls feel almost microscopic. Would work much better if whole upper left quarter and lower left quarter were an option for those more interest in playing than focusing on exact location of invisible buttons.

Good game, some flaws and bugs

It's a great game. If you liked Gradius you'll love this.

It has some problems:

1 - the onscreen controls disappear after several minutes of gameplay for some reason, and there's no way to get them back without restarting the game.
2 - the lack of auto fire really starts to give you arthritis of the thumb after five minutes of gameplay; I mean it REALLY does a number on your thumb joints, no joke. This is partially because you're tapping on a screen instead of mashing a physical button, so it's more awkward for the thumb and induces stress injury on the thumb more quickly. Bust out the capsaicin.

And most importantly:

3 - the final weapon (at least from what I can tell) that you can get after collecting so many diamonds is *way* inferior to the previous weapon. Namely, the final weapon is a straight-direction shooter, but the weapon previous to that is a very powerful spread shooter. The enjoyment of the game goes way down once you get the last weapon because there's no way to go back to the better weapon. It kinda discourages you from collecting any diamonds once you get the second-to-last weapon. And if you accidentally do earn the last weapon, your spacecraft becomes so immensely less powerful that you just feel like quitting the game.

But seriously, this is a great game, and I mean it. I never write App Store reviews, but I'm writing this one because this is by far my favorite side-scrolling shooter on iOS. I'm giving it 3 stars only because my standards are high. I think most people will love it like I did.

Another great title from OrangePixel!

They did it again. Classic retro gaming on the iPhone = win.
