Can’t get it to work

I’ve tried four times to download this app. I create my name and then when I try to share my status, I get the error “Your iCloud is currently unavailable! To share your status, make sure that you're logged into iCloud, and that "iCloud Drive" and "Oh Bother" are both enabled in the iCloud section of your Settings app.” I am logged into iCloud, and it seems that both iCloud and the oh bother app are enabled.

I couldn’t tell if it is a game or if it is real when I see it in the App Store

Would be Great if…

This app is just awesome! I mean the idea behind it and the way you executed the idea and made it a simple and functional app is magnificent.

Given the fact that you’re an IOS developer (based on a glimpse into your blog), I know it’s not really potential for us to have an Android version coming for it. It would’ve been just GREAT!

Since my housemate uses Android and I’m sure alotta other people having the same situation. Anyways, nice idea;

Keep up the good energy and mindset u have my friend.

“Currently Logged Out of iCloud”

I saw another review with this problem and even sent an email to get this issue fixed, but to no avail. I want to use this app as it would be beneficial for myself and my family, but I cannot use the features it offers without this problem being fixed. Will update review if I ever find a solution.

**Update (1/31): I received a very kind email from Daniel who told me that I needed to have iCloud Drive toggled on for this to work. His words: “To check this, head to the Settings app, tap your name, tap “iCloud”, and check that both the “iCloud Drive” and “Oh Bother” switches are turned on.” That fixed the problem!!!**

Great for communication tool for couples?

Currently picked this app up to use with my current long distance partner to communicate during the day when we are busy and when we are free to talk and such. Takes the hassle out of creating and organizing a planner.

Has Potential

I like the UI and concept so much, I went ahead and made the one-time purchase to support :)

So I have the latest app version 1.1 and after reading some of the reviews, I noticed I do not have the option to add custom status updates. App also says I’m signed out of iCloud but I checked my phone’s settings and I’m signed in. I’m confused.. maybe it’s a bug? When these issues are fixed and it’s working the way it’s advertised, I’ll happily change my review and the rating to 5 stars ✌🏼

Response from developer

Hey, thanks for the thoughtful review, and sorry about the issues you're running into! If the app is saying you're signed out of iCloud, it's likely because your iCloud settings need to be tweaked — since the app uses iCloud to facilitate private sharing, I'm at the mercy of some quirks in how iCloud works. To resolve this, head to the Settings app, tap your name, tap “iCloud”, and check that both the “iCloud Drive” and “Oh Bother” switches are turned on. I'll definitely be making the app more helpful with this stuff in the future! As for custom contexts: they're coming in 1.2, which will be out any day now! So stay tuned 📻

Great Concept but Lacks Functionality

Great concept. Advises whether or not you are “botherable” and for how long and why. However, if notifications could be sent to your followers that would be AMAZING! The app assumes people will look at your status. But, today who wants to spend extra time on another app? Set up a push notification and this immediately becomes a 5 star app.

Hey, thanks for checking out the app! I've got some good news: Oh Bother actually does support notifications — if you tap the little bell icon next to any of your housemate's names, you can subscribe to get notified when their status changes 🥳 I appreciate the feedback though — I'll be looking to make this feature more obvious in the future.

Great App I love the concept but

only giving 4 stars because i’m confused on why we can’t have custom “context” options?

Says “you’re currently logged out of iCloud”

Even though I’m logged in to icloud in my settings it tells me I’m logged out when I try to share my status. Want to give this app more stars because it’s seems very useful right now but can’t justify it if it doesn’t work :/

Hey, sorry about the issues you're running into! A few others are running into this as well. Great app, needs automation

Love this app, great for setting boundaries in home. Would like to see some automation features such as scheduling i.e. botherable and then I botherable for a set times for a set number of intervals and definitely Shortcuts integration for a quick x minute toggle for instance!

Works for husbands too

I love this app! I could set my status to “unbotherable” and my husband would leave me alone for a specified duration of time. Finally! I get some peace! 😂 It also works for introverts that just don’t want to participate with life and need alone time to recharge before needing to be a decent person and socialize with people. Simple and easy to use! Try it!

cute idea... but quite a few bugs

i wanted to share this with a bunch of friends on snapchat and messenger, but when i go to share it through those apps, it brings up a notification that only allows it to be shared through contacts or a specific email/ number. pretty bummed about that ): it seems like a very creative wonderful thing but it seems like it needs more work put into it

Amazing app

It’s very good app, well designed and great experience. Especially in this time ( corona )

Great starting point

I love the concept of this app. I’ve installed it on the devices of my elementary aged kids during the work from home period and they love using it as well (they get a kick out of setting their statuses for me to see as too!)

In the future, I would love to have iPad support so I could keep this app in my slideover view to be able to quickly change status. Shortcut support would also allow for a bunch of cool implementations.

As others have stated, I would also love for the app to be able to automatically set my status based on my calendars, and customizable contexts would be great.

All-in-all though, this is a great 1.0 version of this app!

Beautiful

Super useful, but also well-made with a beautiful UI. If you did ever consider open-sourcing this, it’d be a great learner example especially if it uses SwiftUI though obviously you don’t have to. Either way it’s a lovely app.

••• Oh Bother! Requires iOS 13 (!!!)

iOS 12 was the most current iOS version just 9 months ago, and it is still receiving regular security updates from Apple; yet all our various folks who have the many, *many* various recent older and/or hand-me-down Apple devices that can’t update from iOS 12 to 13, can’t run this app.

So, unless you’re very shortly going to order and setup new iOS/iPadOS 13 devices for all the various folks inclined to bother you... um...

Be careful inviting folks to use this app to view your status — if they can’t use the app because they’re stuck on iOS 12, does that suggest you’ll now be getting them a new device...?

And, many folks are actually patiently awaiting the release of 5G models from Apple before replacing their devices. That’ll be about half-a-year from now, at best.

Also, if you personally employ a mix of iOS 12 and iOS 13 devices, mentally keeping track of which actually have this app installed, and periodically fetching/picking up/switching to them just to update or check status(es), is another point of friction.

For an app intended to be widely employed, in the home/family/friends contexts it is intended for, this limitation is a serious oversight (and, one which would also directly affect any prospective watchOS version of the app, as well).

Nevertheless, this app still gets 5 stars and a tip, on potential.

Here’s hoping this app is expanded in coverage to iOS 12, iPadOS 12/13, watchOS, and macOS... somewhat soon.

Good first attempt. Add calendar integration for 5 stars

If this app could read calendar data (choose specific calendars to read), and automatically set Botherable status based on whether a calendar event is in progress, it would be AMAZING!

Great first Version

I read about this app on 9to5Mac. This helps out so much in a house with several adolescents when I’m on conference calls. Being able to set a timer and add context to the “unbotherable” status is great.

It would be nice if we can have permanent notifications of status changes so we don’t have to reenable the alerts. Also, being able to choose “botherable” but then adding a context like “headphones” to say I can be bothered, but I have headphones in would be amazing.

Thanks for all of the hard work on this app and I can’t wait to see the future.

Response from developer

Hi! Good news: in Oh Bother 1.1, you now have the option to enable permanent notifications. There are also some new botherable contexts, including one to indicate you've got headphones on. Thanks so much for the feedback – super helpful. Enjoy!

Beautifully Designed

I love the way this app looks and feels. It solves a common problem and looks good doing it!

Wonderful concept and beautifully implemented

I love this app. I’d love it more if it came with an iPad (or even Mac) app, since I try and put my phone away while working from home and rely on my iPad and Mac. Additionally, a Notification Center widget would be useful, especially on iPad, where I could change my status and view my housemates’ statuses directly from my home screen. I paid for the upgraded features because I love what the app can do now, but features like these would most definitely be worth a “lavish” contribution to the tip jar ;)
