About
on our way is a participatory art installation about leaving.
When you open the app inside a participating gallery, it records your walk
home — the slow line you trace away from the building, into the city, back
to wherever you came from. Your path is drawn live onto a gallery display,
layered with everyone else's, so the room slowly fills with the shape of
how people leave.
This is a small art project, not a service. There's no account, no
profile, no algorithm. You pick a color and (if you want) a name, you
record one walk, and that walk becomes part of an accumulating drawing
made entirely of paths visitors have taken.
How it works:
• At the gallery, the app shows you the recording screen
• Tap once to start. Walk wherever you're going
• The app keeps recording in the background — you can put your phone away
• It auto-stops when it senses you've stopped walking, or you can tap to end
• Your trail uploads and joins the gallery display
Why background location:
The app uses background location so your trail keeps being recorded once
your phone is in your pocket. If you don't grant background access, the
recording will pause when you lock your screen and your trail will be cut
short. We only record while you have an active session running — never
otherwise.
What we collect:
• GPS points during an active recording, every ~10 seconds
• A randomly-generated anonymous user ID
• Optionally, a display name and color you choose
We don't collect your email, contacts, photos, device identifiers, or
anything else. There are no analytics, no advertising, no third-party
trackers. The full privacy policy is at https://wewere.online/privacy.
This app is built for a specific gallery installation. Outside of that
context, there's nothing for it to do — the recording screen will appear
but your trail won't display anywhere visible. Find out where it's
showing at https://wewere.online.
