Best UK rail app

This is by far the best UK rail app. I was using it on the other mobile platform for years and was reluctant to move over solely for this app. when it came to IOS moved across.

Don’t listen to the negative reviews, spend 5 mins setting it up and understanding how it works and you will not need to adjust again. It’s very intuitive.

The is the only app I am happy to pay for a subscription. I have tried every single rail app and none come close.

Response from developer

Thank you so much for the kind words and for supporting On Rails over the years, especially across both Android and iOS! It really means a lot to hear that the app is useful for you. On Rails is independently developed, so feedback and support like this genuinely makes a difference. Thanks again for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review.

Requires Pro to Work

Widget no longer works and requests you upgrade to Pro making the baseline app redundant. Unfortunately this is how most apps go these days and greed outstrips any reputation quality. Update - the LIMITED medium widget was previously working before the change and pro was needed only for advanced features. Previous reviews show this cost raise has been tried before.

Response from developer

Thanks for your feedback. We'd like to clarify that the core app continues to work without a Pro subscription, and the free Small widget remains available. Medium and Large widgets are Pro features, so if a subscription expires those widget sizes display an upgrade message. We've continued to refine the experience based on feedback and appreciate you taking the time to share yours. A sustainable revenue model is necessary to cover the ongoing costs of providing live rail data, operating the supporting infrastructure, and continuing development while keeping the core app free and ad-free.

Was a great app

I used this app regularly and had my commonly travelled journeys pinned to my Home Screen as widgets. However, they recently stopped working altogether as the developer has locked this feature behind a paywall. I understand you need to make money off this app but I think making people pay for a feature like this is not on. I will now be uninstalling the app because of this and you have lost a potential customer.

Thanks for the feedback. We understand how important widgets are for regular commuters. We’ve updated the app so the small Home Screen widget is now available again for all users, along with improved widget refresh behaviour. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and hope you’ll consider giving On Rails another try.

Great app until the widget got killed off

Only app on the AppStore that had a informative widget (even though it sometimes wouldn’t update). But now all sized widgets are exclusively for pro users, even though the smaller ones were free before. I would be happy to pay a one of lifetime fee but a monthly subscription for freely accessible data seems a bit silly to me.

Thanks for the feedback and for using On Rails. We’ve since updated the app so the small Home Screen widget is available again for all users, along with improved widget refresh behaviour. We also appreciate the feedback on pricing and are continuing to review the subscription model while balancing ongoing app and server costs. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience.

Beware subscription creep

Used it solely for the Home Screen next train widget. As of latest update this is now a premium subscription feature. Have now uninstalled.

Selling free info

The widget now says only available with Pro, but the widget was always out of date anyway. These are TRAIN times and train times in the widget from 20 mins ago are history.

This app packages free info, and I’d happily pay a small annual fee for the coding work but the monthly rent is out of all proportion to what the app does. I already had all this info for free on my Home Screen before On Rails came along. I know you’d like that much money, but you have a far better chance of getting it with a higher volume of smaller more realistic fees

Unreliable

Nicely presented but unfortunately the widget routinely fails to update, showing trains to be on time when all other apps (and indeed this app when you open it) correctly show it as delayed... or even just showing the last train that's already long gone. Will likely keep for other use cases as the in-app experience is more reliable and slick. But reliability is everything with this kind of app guys, sorry.

Response from developer

Thanks for your feedback — really appreciate you taking the time to share this. Sorry to hear about the widget not updating reliably. That definitely shouldn’t be your experience, and you’re absolutely right that reliability is critical for this kind of app. Widgets on iOS are updated by the system, and by default our widget refreshes approximately every 15 minutes. There is also an option in the app to reduce this to around 5 minutes — do you happen to know which setting you were using? If you’re seeing cases where the widget is significantly out of date (e.g. showing trains that have already departed), we’d really like to investigate further. Please feel free to reach out via our in-app email support with a bit more detail (route, time, and what the widget vs app showed), and we’ll look into it. Glad to hear the in-app experience has been working well for you, and we’ll keep working to bring the widget up to that same level of reliability. Thanks again for the feedback.

Great little app

Really excellent support, and one of the few apps that provides a widget.

Would prefer a flat fee to a sub for the Pro features, however.
