About

**PLEASE NOTE: Make sure you have a device which can run these models!! See below!** How OnChip AI works OnChip AI uses Apple’s Foundation Models framework to run the large language model that is built into Apple Intelligence directly on your device’s chip. A large language model is an AI system trained to understand and generate text in response to what you type. * Every prompt you send and every reply you receive is processed locally by the on-device model. * OnChip AI does not send your messages to Siri, to ChatGPT, or to any other cloud AI service. * Because everything runs on your device, the app does not need an internet connection to chat. It works the same in airplane mode, on a flight, underground, or anywhere else without Wi-Fi or cellular service. The model itself is provided and updated by Apple as part of the operating system. * Apple Intelligence must be turned on in Settings (or System Settings on Mac) for the app to work. The Foundation Models framework runs on any device that supports Apple Intelligence, and as of iOS/iPadOS/macOS 27 there are effectively two tiers: Baseline: runs the standard ~3B on-device model iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max; iPhone 16e, 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max; iPhone 17e, 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The standard iPhone 15, 15 Plus, and anything older are excluded. iPad: iPad mini (A17 Pro), plus iPad Air and iPad Pro with M1 or newer. Mac: MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with M1 or later, iMac and Mac mini with M1 or later, Mac Studio with M1 Max or later, and Mac Pro with M2 Ultra. In short, every Apple silicon Mac. Intel Macs are excluded. Top tier: runs the stronger on-device model introduced at WWDC 2026 Apple’s most powerful on-device model requires an iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone Air, an M4 or later iPad with 12GB of memory, or an M3 or later Mac with 12GB of memory. On the iPad side, this is the M4 iPad Air, M4 iPad Pro configurations with 1TB or more of storage, and the M5 iPad Pro. Note: the base M4 iPad Pro storage tiers only have 8GB of RAM and aren't supported.
