What's New in OpenLibrary Explorer
1.0.2
September 22, 2026
This release focuses on delivering a discovery-first user experience, eliminating redundant navigation controls, optimizing layout density across multiple device screen densities, and finalizing production ad-monetization pipelines. Key Improvements & Deliverables: 1. Discovery-First Home Experience - Branded Visual Header: Upgraded the primary header with a modern dual-tone typographic brand (openlibrary EXPLORER) and clear subtitle positioning, replacing the default system headline. - Integrated Search Field: Streamlined the search interaction by removing the rigid standalone blue submit button in favor of an integrated search field with prefix indicators and keyboard (returnKeyType="search") execution. - Filter Strip De-duplication: Cleaned up the top horizontal refinement bar by removing duplicate subject pills, dedicating that bar strictly to search-result filters (With Cover, Rated Books only). 2. Enhanced "Popular Searches" - Multi-Line Wrapping Layout: Replaced the horizontally overflowing single scroll row with a multi-line flex-wrapping chip container (flexWrap: 'wrap'), ensuring all trending items remain visible on standard mobile displays. - Expanded Curated Selection: Broadened the quick-search catalog to include high-demand titles across productivity, fiction, philosophy, and finance (e.g., Atomic Habits, Dune, The Psychology of Money, Thinking, Fast and Slow). - Direct Execution: Tapping any popular chip instantly populates the search query, triggers the backend catalog search, and handles result state tracking. 3. Redesigned "Browse by Genre" - Thematic Genre Expansion: Reorganized subject categories into high-yield Open Library catalog subjects (Fiction, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Mystery, Self-Help, Business & Finance, History, Tech & Code, Biographies, and Philosophy). - Color-Coded Visual Anchors: Added distinct color tints paired with left accent borders for quick visual scanning. 4. Navigation & Back to Home Flow - Direct "← Home" Control: Integrated a dedicated Home return button into the search results header row, allowing users to exit search mode and return to the discovery landing page in one tap. - Header Reset Action: Linked the main top brand title to reset search parameters, dismiss active queries, and remount the home discovery layout. 5. Native Infrastructure & Production Readiness - Dynamic AdMob Isolation: Safeguarded react-native-google-mobile-ads with dynamic imports and runtime store-client detection (isExpoGo), preventing bundle evaluation crashes during Expo Go development while preserving banner serving in production builds.
