WHY BOTHER A glass from the tap costs a fraction of bottled water and leaves no plastic behind. At home, and just as much in a restaurant, a carafe of tap water is the cheaper and the cleaner choice. It is worth knowing what is in it first. Opota lets you look that up before you drink: what the most recent official analysis found, whether any value sits close to a binding legal limit, whether the authority published a note for infants or during pregnancy — and whether the water is likely to taste the way you expect from good water. THREE SCORES Safety — how close the worst measured value comes to its binding legal limit. Never rated better than the health authority's own verdict on the sample. Taste — a weighted average of the parameters people actually notice: chlorine, mineralisation, hardness, iron, manganese, chloride, sulphate, pH and clarity. Only what was really measured counts. Coffee — brew water judged against the SCA standard. Never part of the overall score: very soft water is perfectly good to drink and still makes thin, sour coffee. The overall score is the lower of safety and taste. The water is only as good as its weaker half. WHERE THE DATA COMES FROM Hub'Eau, the French open-data service for water, which publishes the sanitary control results collected by the regional health agencies (ARS) under SISE-Eaux. Opota measures nothing itself and never alters a published value. Results appear once the authority has validated them, which usually takes two to five months — the date shown is always the real sampling date. PRIVACY No account, no tracking, no analytics. WHAT IT CANNOT TELL YOU It does not know about boil-water notices, burst mains or other short-term restrictions, and it cannot see the pipes inside your building — old indoor plumbing can add lead or copper after the meter.
