Great alternative to 3D Slicer for segmenting and modeling!

We are a group of medical students in the Philadelphia region who are looking at finding new and innovative ways to incorporate 3D printing in surgical planning and pre-op. We commonly start with patient CT DICOM files and need to make a segmented 3D model of the bony or tissue structures for our projects.

Previously, we had been using 3D Slicer for this step. Though extremely powerful for us, it comes with many flaws that affect the user experience. It frequently crashes and we lose all our work. Furthermore, there is no “undo” option so if we mess up a step or want to change something, we have to restart.

We tested out Ossa 3D as an alternative recently. We found it to be much more user friendly and faster for our workflow. Though it doesn’t have as many features as 3D Slicer, it is much better for us in creating 3D models of bone and tissue. It is great to view the models on an iPad and easily manipulate it with our fingers. We have also found that modeling in Ossa 3D allows us to shorten our post-processing time in MeshMixer. Lastly, the Ossa 3D team has been extremely helpful in responding to our questions and issues and have great customer service.

Excellent mobile planning tool!

I have had the chance to work with this app on an iPad 3, and it has run smoothly with a large dataset. My work has been largely soft tissue defects in the head and neck area. It is a very straightforward matter to import my DICOM data, select my target region and manipulate to get to the 3D model I need to create. The export to STL is also quite easy. My team had the chance to use Ossa 3D and Mimetics software head to head, and for our work, Ossa 3D produced the same result in much less time and with very straightforward workflow. This is a must-have for anyone interested in 3D planning. Great job!
