About

Squeeze any web page into the greys between paper and ink. Pale Ink is a full-screen browser. You type an address and it renders the whole page live as dithered black-and-white e-paper. Those greys are not continuous — they are piles of blue-noise dots, like something printed. Not a filtered screenshot The look is added at composite time, so the app spends nothing per frame. The page keeps scrolling, animating and loading at its native frame rate; links and buttons stay tappable, text fields still take text. Measured: 60 fps while scrolling, 0.3% dropped frames. Why blue noise The threshold matrix is blue noise generated offline with the void-and-cluster algorithm. Not ordered dithering, which leaves a visible grid across large flat areas. Not error diffusion, which makes every pixel wait on its neighbours and cannot be handed to the GPU. It opens as an object The built-in home page is not a dashboard but something that stands on your desk: one large price, the time half a step below, a year-progress line along the bottom. It keeps running offline, and parameters in the address swap in the coins, currency or GitHub counts you care about. Only two gestures are taken Press and hold anywhere, or shake the phone, for settings. Pinch with two fingers for canvas mode: the page becomes an object you can drag, scale and rotate, and the placement is remembered per address. Everything else on screen belongs to the page. What you can adjust • Dither: grain size 1–6 px, dither strength, quantisation steepness • Tone: contrast, brightness, invert • Appearance: five screen palettes, front light and warmth, paper grain, hardware bezel, Dynamic Island avoidance • Interaction: keep the screen awake, show the live frame rate • Four one-tap presets: e-reader, coarse grain, high contrast, soft greys Saved pages Save an address and the grain, paper tone and contrast it had are saved with it. One tap later, the page and its look come back together — fiction in soft greys, code in high contrast, the desk ornament in warm aged paper. The interface is paper and ink too The settings panel draws no rules at all. A switch is an empty square with an ink stamp in it; a slider is a hairline and one square block of ink. The panel takes its colours from the palette you are choosing, so it yellows along with the screen. Eighteen interface languages, switchable instantly with no restart. About the name Pale ink is the fourth of the five ink tones, thinned with water until it reads grey, and used to paint distant mountains. The greys here are piled out of dots — the Mi family's own technique of building surfaces from accumulated points. Price One week free with nothing held back.
