Unfulfilled Potential for its Price

Love it, except for the ‘journal page view’ size-to-screen ratio issue, and no portrait or rotation mode. A high price to pay for such absences.

When editing a page, they keep automatically rotating to double-page landscape, despite being in portrait mode; Then when you go back to view the journal pages, the writing is all sideways. This feels ridiculous and frustrating. Even if you create a portrait page in the thumbnail view, it still displays sideways in the journal page view. Such a waste, because the journal page view is the best thing about this app. Though it also has its issues of under-utilised screen space…

The interface buttons above and below the journal page view don’t need to take up so much valuable screen space, when it would be so much better if it were bigger and filling more of the screen for better readability. Or just have a full-screen journal page view; The page-turning is beautiful, but sadly displays the content much smaller than what the screen estate actually allows for. Such a pity, because this feature is what makes this app stand out from all the other journaling apps. It makes me actually want to go back and view, read, and reflect on what has been recorded.

The pens and tools are wonderfully simple, though putting the ‘cut’ tool behind a paywall is very tactical, as $10 a WEEK is far steeper than any other app subscription I’ve come across. However, the free version is adequately useful with its well-designed simplicity.

The extremely steep subscription price might feel more justified if the app was designed to its full potential, utilising the devices’ native screen rotation for optimal input, and properly filling the screen space for better viewing (arguably its best feature). It seems silly that the journal page view only fills about 60% of an iPad screen, and around 20% on an iPhone, with its lack of native rotation integration. (It forces a landscape rotation in portrait mode editing, yet won’t let me view the journal landscape when I’m actually in landscape mode.)

I’ll see how long I continue to use this app for, and keep a hopeful eye out for any updates.

I can’t draw

I’m 8 and I like to draw but you can’t even do something with it or me or the app 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤯🤯🤯🤯

That smudge stick!

As a children’s book illustrator, I’ve tried several drawing apps. Paper is by far my favorite. It’s all because of the smudge tool, which allows me to blend and make the subjects in my drawings come to life.
I also appreciate its intuitive tool bars, which allowed me to learn quickly and become proficient. FIVE stars!

Paywalled

The constant pop ups asking to upgrade made it basically unusable as a free program. I wouldn’t waste a download on it

An Almost Perfect App

This app is absolutely amazing! I love basically everything about it HOWEVER this would be a 5/5 stars for me if it only had text tools. I have horrible handwriting and i am super picky with brushes/pens for writing and I’m not the biggest fan of them for writing (shaky hands so i wish there was more stabilisation for pens) so ultimately text tools would be best. Also i wish there were more colour pallets but that doesn’t affect my rating really.

Not shared subscription

I got it so my kids can play around with scrapbooking, but they want $99.99 per person to use the pro features. I would have liked it if it did share. Most times Apple will say you already purchased this and not charge you. Family sharing doesn’t work. Beware

My review

I love it!! It is sooo useful!!!

Easy to use

Paper is a fun app to doodle in! Controls are basic and easy to use. I love it.

It’s good for a time

I started using the app after I saw it being recommended and it was honestly really good! It was simple and easy to understand the features and I honestly didn’t need to pay (staying on the free tier) because I was only using it for coloring. Didn’t heat up my iPad either. I didn’t know that even the free tier had a trial and that when it ended it would restrict even the basic tools like pen sizes unless you pay. Very cash-grabby move on their part. Will be finding a better alternative which honestly sucks. I hope they do better in the future.

Evernote Lock-in

Redownloaded Paper after a few years away to attempt to access some older notes. The content is all wiped with the migration to Evernote, an app well known for its lock-in. Great at note taking, horrible for long term support.

Genuinely what is this app

I’d give it zero stars if I could. I’m not downloading Evernote, but if I want to save my drawings, or make an account, I have to download that useless app. It won’t let you skip the ages long tutorial and the drawing tools aren’t even good. I just want to put my digital art into a digital moving sketchbook. You lowk can’t use this app unless you pay for it AND download a whole different app??

Its too expensive. 🙁

I would go ahead and say that I love this app, with zero hesitation. Its just that when I realised that you get 10 pages only, I knew something was up. I then saw that its ridiculously expensive and that there was no point in me ever using it again because of the terrible prices. The worst part about it, is that I like the style! Its simple, enjoyable, and not too overly comp and overwhelming. Im really disappointed as I would love to use it but Im not paying £10 a week so I can use it every now and then.

Honestly…

Everything about the app and features fine but seriously, why just everything be subscription based? I just want a one lifetime purchase ugh!! There’s hardly any grand updates happening that requires a weekly or annual payment….. can we live with less greed going around please….

They want to kill this app

This app got bought by Evernote who is so greedy and desperate to consume a perceived competitor and destroy it. They want to deter us all from using this app. I don’t know why. I loved this app, but if you’re a weekly subscriber, it’ll cost you up to $400 a year to use this app. There is nothing else like it and they know that. Awful company.

Cool app I guess

The app is really cool but seriously… $10 a WEEK or $100 a year is pretty outrageous

A virtual moleskin with your own roll of art supplies

For the analog artist who wants to make beautiful work on the go. No graphs and planning, no learning layers, just pick a tool and size (I like the pencil on large) and draw as though it’s all real under your hand. I’m obsessed. There’s no better program for a real artist.

Very nice app!! +reccomendation

I love paper!! It’s great to organize and create. My one recommendation is to remove the yellow cast from the notebooks you aren’t clicked on if that makes sense. 💗

Price is a joke

$20 a month on the LITE plan is an absolute joke for such a basic simple app. I wouldn’t even lay $20 ONE TIME PURCHASE for this app. And you want $240 a year. This greedy subscription culture needs to be stopped. Get real. Other reviews are all botted.

Predatory and overpriced

There is no universe in where this app is worth 10 USD a week and the free version is a trial that if I forget to cancel, will charge me that for a week. Genuinely one of the greediest pricing schemes I’ve come across. I used to really enjoy this app for its simplicity, but that simplicity does not justify prices id expect from adobe.

Good app but...

It is a great app for drawing and journaling but the fact that its 10 $$$ a week is just... But otherwise 🔥🔥🔥
