Patina: Object Diary

Some things get better with use. Leather darkens. Brass dulls and brightens where a thumb rests. Glaze crazes. A denim knee fades to the shape of the person wearing it. Patina is a diary for one meaningful object, kept in photographs. Photograph something you care about. Come back in six months, or six years, and photograph it again. Then drag a seam across the two frames and watch the change appear. Not described, not measured, just shown. HOW IT WORKS Add an object and give it a name. Each time you notice a change, add an observation: a photograph, the date it was taken, and a note if you want one. Two observations are enough to compare. Already have years of photographs? Add them all at once from your library, and Patina dates them from the photographs themselves. THE COMPARISON One draggable seam reveals the earlier photograph beneath the later one. Both dates stay visible. A timeline beneath shows every observation you have made, spaced by when you made it, so the gaps in a long history are as legible as the photographs. Drag either end to compare any two dates. LOOK CLOSER Switch to the Loupe and drag a circle over the later photograph to see the earlier one inside it, at the same place and the same scale. The crease where the verdigris started. The corner of the strap that darkened first. SHARE THE SEAM Export a comparison as a ten-second video. The seam sweeps across your two photographs, both dates on screen, ready for Messages or your feed. Or share a still of both dates side by side. PHOTOGRAPH IT THE SAME WAY TWICE The hard part of a comparison is framing. When you photograph an object that already has a picture, Patina lays the earlier frame over the viewfinder so you can line the object up before pressing the shutter. Adjust how strongly it shows. REMINDERS Change is slow, and slow things are easy to forget. Each object can quietly remind you every three or six months, measured from your last photograph.
