Like, but it needs a security update

I like this app, but it’s impossible to connect to most servers without reconfiguring them because they won’t accept the old protocol/kex which this app uses. Update please?

Veraltet

Die App ist veraltet und unterstützt keine aktuellen Verschlüsselungsmethoden. Eine Verbindung mit aktuellen SSH-Servern schlägt daher fehl. Es sei denn, man weicht die Sicherheit am Server auf.

Worked well for years

This does exactly what I need and nothing more. Sync raw uncompressed photos to a NAS or Unix like server. Recently after my latest Linux upgrades, this app stopped working. Found how to edit the sshd_config and allow older algorithms. This should keep it going for many more years.

KexAlgorithms +diffie-hellman-group1-sha1,diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha1

HostkeyAlgorithms +ssh-dss,ssh-rsa

Schnell und einfach

Die 2023 geladene Version ist Jahre alt, funktioniert aber auf Anhieb schnell und prima.
Getestet mit rsync über ssh auf Linux.
5 Sterne, sowas habe ich lange gesucht und nun gefunden

Useful!!!

Dear Creator,
First of all, I would like to thank you for the PhotoBackup app for iOS. It is a simple yet highly useful solution that I appreciate. However, I’ve encountered an issue when trying to back up a large number of files. The app consistently closes itself, and I notice a ‘photobackup.partial’ file on the server. The same result occurs when using SSH or Rsync. How can I assist you in identifying and resolving this bug?

Almost perfect but an issue makes it unusable

This app only support the key exchange algorithms diffie-hellman-group14-sha1,diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha1,diffie-hellman-group1-sha1. These are weak and no longer supported by almost all SFTP servers, so this app can no longer backup files.

If this gets fixed it would 5 stars from me. Fingers crossed for the future!

Not up to date

Won’t connect to my distribution’s sshd. Complains that it can’t exchange keys. This is because it uses outdated diffie-helman-xxxx-sha1 while more recent distros enforce xxxx-sha256 for security. I couldn’t make my sshd accept the kex that this program offers so unfortunately I won’t be using it.

rsync

Vergesst die ganzen sync-apps. Einfach per rsync photos backuppen. Schnell, effizient, sicher.

3 Sterne weil die App scheinbar nicht mehr gemaintained wird und inzwischen öfter mal abstürzt und nicht mehr alles backupt.

Simply brilliant

Updated 01/12/2020: I’m still using this app weekly to sync my now 8000+ photo camera roll to my Synology NAS (and saving a small fortune on an iCloud storage subscription in the process). I’m currently on iOS 14.2 and the app continues to run without issue despite there being no updates to it in ~3 years. Will continue to recommend this app!

Original review from 2 years ago:
A simple little app that backs up all the latest photos in my camera roll to my Synology NAS. SSH and rsync are perfect for this purpose and the new images since last run are transferred blinding quickly. No more mucking about with iTunes to get the photos off my phone and backed up to my home server. Simply brilliant!

No longer works with IOS 14.1

Not working

Please update your ssh command, missing support for recent MAC. Can’t connect

Best local file back up

I’ve use this app four years and backed up terabytes of photos and videos on hand fulls of phones over that time.

personal storage

very useful for users managing their personal storage
not that icloud is not useful, but I rather control my personal data

i just hope it will be maintained, when a incompatible ios comes out

Not really usable

When I started using this application, I knew that it is no longer supported. Testing phase was successful so far. I love the simplicity of the app: Once set up, a single button backs up all my photos. The only obvious inconvenience is that it must run in the foreground to do anything. That means it will block the phone and prevents the screen from locking.
What I found out in the field is that the app randomly skips photos. This means that I cannot rely on my backup. What is a backup worth that is unreliable?
The only workaround is to manually select each and every photo to back up. Once I was past 500 or so, this stopped being fun.

This could be a fantastic app if it just did what it promises.
In its current state it is proof of concept only.

Works, no nonsense. For advanced users.

If you don’t know what rsync is and a google search leaves you more confused, this isn’t the right app for you. Otherwise it works great. Microsoft’s USB sync gives up while this app keeps running and trying.

I didn’t get the ssh key download to work so I don’t know if ssh works. But the rsync protocol works. If you’re having trouble check the logs on the server.
The only thing on my wishlist is multiple profiles to allow easy syncing to more than one server.

Perfect for nas backup

Good

Very good, but lacks options

Very nice app! It works beautifully also over vpn. Anyway, it lacks the possibility to delete the photos that as been deleted on the phone from the server on next backup

Great app, needs a ‘Skip corrupt files’ option

Super useful app!
I ran into a situation where it couldn’t read a movie file and rather then skip it it would just stop at the file.
It’s really hard to find this file as the iOS photo app won’t give you file names.
The only way I could do it was by attaching files to an email then I would get the number of the file and narrow it down.
Once I deleted the file the app could continue backing up.
It’d be great if we could get that automated somehow.

Did not get any support

Application is failing since the very first run. Posted 1 star review and did not get any answer for a long time. Disgusting

Loved it but it doesn’t work anymore

This was my go to app for backing up my photos. But it is broken (gives error writing to socket message) when trying to backup...which leads me to believe that it needs to be updated.
