App needs work, but love the idea

Was really fun & easy to set up Raspberry Pi and get finally get my old Aperture Library archived without moving them to Photos, but still have them accessible. The open source gallery is great, but the iPhone app needs a lot of work.

The issues that need work, swiping through photos it frustrating bc the thumbnails are so sensitive. You’ll swipe and it opens a photo full screen, or it selects the photo so you can tag it or add to album. I just wanted to swipe, also if it does swipe, the next swipe will have the wrong behavior and jump you back to the top.

I tried to make an album after selecting some images, but you can’t select the bottom row bc the navigation is in the way. Every once in a while, it would start getting real crazy. You select a second photo and the first photo unselects. The next kicker is that when you finally do get the photos selected without accidentally opening one up full screen (which resets the progress you made selecting photos) then hit the button to make an album, then it asks you to add a tag, not make an album.

This app for iOS needs work, but the actual library/gallery backend is sooo amazing. I recommend just using the self-hosted gallery, and visiting from a computer rather than a touch screen device until they resolve the issues (as the same behavior described above also occurs on the mobile web version of the gallery). I had to rate low bc this is for the app itself. The Self-Hosted Gallery is 5-stars, but this app just needs a lot of work.

Fantastic Self Hosted Photo Option

This program is amazing. I found Piwigo to be somewhat bloated and more of a web gallery than a personal folder/photo option. Then tried both PiGallery2 and Photoview, both of which are fast, functional and perfect for what they are designed for… but I wanted better functionality without the large footprint of Photoprism.

The two best (for my needs of indexing & managing pre-existing folders of photos) are Photonix and Damselfly.

At first run, it took awhile to run through my whole collection of images and I was bothered by what seemed to be laggy performance, but then realized it’s actually doing extensive analysis of each photo and has such a powerful search functionality. Not only can I find photos based on object detection (mediocre recognition performance), but it also has Face ID, and even selection based on the color palette of the image.

All in all, really love this program & app and hope the team don’t abandon this awesome product.
