Pinhole Assist User Reviews

Top reviews

I use it every time

This app is great for metering, getting a view of the picture the pinhole makes, and incorporating reciprocity curves. Even works with slide film (which is known for being tough to meter). I recommend it to everyone.

The only potential feedback I could give would be to match the zoom and shape) square vs rectangle) to the image size and focal length, and maybe to allow a “blurry” view to better anticipate what the pinhole camera might capture.

Great But Room for Improvement

This is really the best pinhole light metering app out there, and I can’t knock it. I make my own pinhole cameras, and I need the option to manually enter my own f stop if it does not appear on pulldown list. Otherwise very well done!

Essential for pinhole photographers

I’ve been using the app for more than 3 years. My absolute recommendation for all enthusiasts of pinhole photography. A must have

Very nice app!

Very helpful app for pinhole photos. The metering works well and it is easy to find and use aperture and film data. Timer helps a lot also.

Good support, though I needed extra steps because developer uses Facebook for support. [I don’t like being tracked by Facebook and refuse to install or use it.] Developer responded quickly after I used my review to request support.

Need support without facebook

I do not and will never have a facebook account, but I do need support.
The app crashes within 5-10 seconds after I open it. After several tries, I deleted and re-installed the app but still getting same crashes. Can’t use app at all now.

iOS 17.6.1

Please fix…

App Crashing on iPad Pro

The App looks really good, but can’t really use it. As soon as I change any values it crashes on iPad Pro (9,7”), ios 16.7.7
Installed twice, just the same thing happens. Such a pity…

Absolutely fantastic for Pinhole!

I've used this app for a couple years now, and have seen many improvements over time. The combination of having a whole lot of camera presets built in, along with reciprocity failure calculation for a huge list of films, there's not really anything more I could ask to add. This is an absolute must have app if you're serious about nailing exposure in some tricky situations. Very, very flexible and adaptable to just about any scenario!

Le compagnon du sténopiste

J'utilise cette appli depuis des années pour déterminer les temps de pose avec différents appareils à sténopé et les résultats sont parfaits.

Very useful

I’m relatively new to pinhole photography. Currently using Thingyfy lenses on my EOS 5D MKIV. I tried out this app for the first time today. With all parameters set correctly, I was able to get good exposures the first time. You have to covert the aperture diameters to f stops. Then you are ready to go. I was able to get good images with long exposures at ISO 100. Very pleased. Thanks.

Works great.

Really like this app

Great support!

I regret the 3 star review that I wrote in frustration when all my combos disappeared. This has been fixed and the communication has been excellent. This is a great app, so helpful for pinhole photography.

Response from developer

It is fixed now (Dec 1st) with version 4.12. We are sorry for the trouble the previous update generated. Now Pinhole Assist is back on the tracks.

Great tool

I really like this tool. It saves me the trouble of figuring out the exposure time given the small aperture of a pinhole camera.

However, it does crash every single time I try to add a film (when I edit the reciprocity correction table). This is very annoying.

Response from developer

Hello. sorry for that trouble. We haven't been able to reproduce it. Please contact us (contact.leborddelapiscine@gmail.com) so We could diagnose and remedy to that problem.

My favorite pinhole app!!

This is my go to app for pinhole photography. I just started playing around with pinhole cameras about a year ago and this has made getting good results much easier, especially because it takes reciprocity failure rate for whatever film you’re using into account.

The only other option I wish it had was the ability to key in “normal” exposure settings from a handheld light meter or dslr test shots and convert it to your pinhole exposure settings.

Regardless, this makes pinhole life soo much easier! Thanks for making this!

Thank you for your appreciation. You can use an external lightmeter ou DSLR. You can enter the EV value from your lightmeter (EV for ISO 100). Set your lightmeter to ISO 100 and read the Exposure Value (between 4 and 17 usually). In pinhole Assist, just below the lightmeter and EV correction, select the tab "Manual EV scale" : there you can enter the metered EV. Alternatively, use the EV computer to report a metering done by DSLR (three bar menu -> EV computer). You can also use our other app 'Reciprocity Plus" to directly report exposure time and compute reciprocity. We hope this reply to your question.

keeps getting better

Thank you, Henry, for the regular updates with the constant additions of films and cameras. There is no other app I value more.

Sehr gutes Hilfsmittel für Fotografen.

Excellent

Indispensable tool for handling pinhole exposures and crucially reciprocity failure. Includes data for common films and commercially available pinhole cameras. Only (minor) downside is the interface is a bit clunky.

Excellente

Superbe application.
Le tout en 1 est top. Simple, intuitif.

A very useful App.

I've used this to calculate exposure on several different film stocks with the RealitySoSubtle 617 and another film camera. It is just about perfect. Creating a log for each photograph within the app is extremely useful. Thanks.

Love the app but it's odd...

Love the app but it's odd that the picture used for the icon is NOT a pinhole camera. It clearly has a lens on it.

Response from developer

Good point. The fact is that a pinhole camera is not easily identifiable on an icon. So I (in 2011) decided to use an old fashioned camera. So I will consider finding a better icon.

Wow

this app blew me away with its features and calculations (especially reciproc fail). I've been using it alongside a pinhole I made in a paintcan and (with the exception of one tricky lighting situation) all my exposures have turned out beautifully
Now Im using it as just a regular light meter, still five stars
