About
Built by a federally recognized pre-apprenticeship instructor who has helped hundreds of applicants get into building-trades unions.
Getting into a union plumbing, pipefitting, steamfitting, or sprinkler-fitting apprenticeship starts with one test: the aptitude battery administered by GAN Human Resources on behalf of United Association (UA) locals across the country. Most locals rank every qualified applicant by score and fill their classes from the top of the list down.
Passing isn't the goal. Out-scoring the list is.
WHAT'S ON THE TEST
The battery runs about 140 questions in roughly two hours, across six timed sections — Reading Comprehension, Numerical Computation (fractions, decimals, percentages), Numerical Reasoning (number series), Problem Solving (word problems), Paper Folding (spatial visualization), and Mechanical Comprehension. No calculator is allowed. Around 70% is a common minimum to qualify (higher at some fitter locals), and your score becomes your ranking number.
HOW PIPEPREP AI GETS YOU RANKED HIGHER

• SECTION DRILLS & MISSED-QUESTION REVIEW — attack your weakest section until it isn't
• SPEED SPRINTS — 60-second no-calculator rounds for fractions, percentages, and number series
• INTERACTIVE PAPER-FOLDING TUTORIAL — the section everyone fears, taught visually: fold, punch, unfold, mirror
• PIPER, YOUR AI TUTOR — ask anything by text or voice: how to add fractions, how gear ratios work, pacing, or what the interview panel scores

COMMON QUESTIONS
Can I use a calculator on the test? No — and that's exactly what this app trains for. Every question here is built to be solved by hand.
What's the passing score? Roughly 70% at most locals, but qualifying just gets you on the list — locals fill seats from the top score down.
Do all locals use the same test? Most UA locals use the GAN battery, but some use other assessments. Always confirm with your local.
What's the hardest section? Usually Paper Folding and the time pressure — both have dedicated training here.

What's New in PipePrep AI
1.0.1
August 26, 2026
The UA locals directory grew from 50 locals to 220 — nearly every plumber, pipefitter, steamfitter, HVAC-R, and sprinkler-fitter local in the country, each with how to apply, what its selection process looks like, and its application window when the local publishes one. Set your local and the app paces your study plan to its deadline. Also fixed: the in-app "leave a review" link and the support contact address.
