About
Identify the feather you just found — offline, at true centimeter scale.
Found a feather on the trail and wondered what bird it came from? Plumes is an offline field guide that puts the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Forensics Laboratory's public-domain Feather Atlas in your pocket: 1,987 calibrated feather scans, 436 species, 72 families. Every scan keeps the original centimeter grid, so you can measure your find against the reference and see how close you are.
Made for curious birders, hikers, educators, and families who pick up a feather and want to learn from it — what might it be, how big is it, and what's the kind, gentle thing to do next.
BROWSE THE ATLAS
• 1,987 calibrated USFWS feather scans — bundled for offline field use, no signal required
• Filter by family, order, feather type, pattern, color, or size band
• Search by common name, Latin name, family, or order
• Museum-style specimen cards: feather type, longest-feather length, pattern, and color at a glance
MATCH YOUR FIND
• Compare your own photo side by side, or as an overlay, against the reference scan
• Both held at the same true centimeter scale, so size is honest — not guesswork
• Slide the opacity to line your feather up right over the reference
• Calibrate scale with a coin from your pocket (US, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, or Euro)
• "Find similar" narrows the reference scans by color so you start close
KEEP A PRIVATE JOURNAL
• Log a found feather with a photo, location, your best guess, and a confidence rating
• Everything stays on your device — EXIF location data is stripped before you share
IDENTIFY IT, THEN LEAVE IT
• Plain-language stewardship notes for each find: US Migratory Bird Treaty Act, UK Wildlife & Countryside Act, Canada MBCA, Australia EPBC Act, New Zealand Wildlife Act
• Written as a gentle invitation to admire and leave behind — never a warning
BUILT FOR iPHONE, iPAD, AND MAC
• Spacious iPad and Mac layout with the bird family tree right in the sidebar
• Lock Screen and Home Screen widget — a new Feather of the Day
• Shortcuts: "Log a feather in Plumes"
• Four app icon choices: Classic, Dark, Warm, and Feather
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
• Account-free, ad-free, analytics-free — and no third-party SDKs
• Works fully offline; nothing you create ever leaves your device
• Reference-first: Plumes shows you the evidence, you make the call
