My wife has been trying to learn Portuguese on Duolingo for almost 3 years (only Brazilian which is a bummer, overall not effective). She can understand a few words but hasn’t really learned the language or how to speak.
As someone who grew up in a Portuguese household and speaks at an advanced to fluent level, this app is phenomenal!
I have been going through it myself to see the quality and I am very impressed with how easy it is to follow, the explanations and structure of the whole program. Any “bug” problems others have mentioned are no longer an issue, seems to be running very smoothly.
My wife will be switching to this app to learn as it’s most importantly European Portuguese but it legitimately teaches you how to speak/understand the language unlike Duolingo.
I want to teach our children Portuguese. Aside from speaking it in the home, this app will be an excellent interactive tool to assist in their learning. This way they can speak with family back in Portugal!

App is too slow
Poor responsiveness of the app means I’ve given up before I’ve started. Too frustrating to navigate.
I would give my first-born for this app to exist for every language
Words can’t express how grateful i am that this app exists!! I never thought apps worked for me as I’m not a fan of Duolingo, Babel, etc. But the structure of the courses, with clear explanations, real-life in-context examples, the native speakers, plus all the podcast and shorty content is incredible. And what’s more it’s PT-PT!! I’m at an A2 level now and will keep using this app alongside lessons with my teacher, at least until I reach B2.

There are other programs like this now that are cheaper. The interface is hard to navigate and bit outdated. Meh
Great concept, very clunky
I would love to give this app a higher rating. The resources are really good, however the pages take ages to load. I cant progress through lessons with it saving my progress and it often doesn’t present buttons to complete a task. It needs a good once over by a UI developer and it would be the best Portuguese language service available

Development is lacking, good for learning European Portuguese
I will start with the good. This is the best app I have found for learning European Portuguese. This was super important to me since my fiancé is Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese is so different from European Portuguese that it was useless to learn Brazil Brazilian Portuguese if I want to speak with my fiancé in his native language. I love the fact that they use real speakers from Portugal to say the words and phrases. The lessons have been very useful and I like the ability to pick my review words and phrases.
Now for the bad. The app is super glitchy and seriously lacking on the development side. I frequently have to close the app and restart it and it can often times be slow to load lessons. It’s also very slow to check your pronunciation. I like the fact that they have the ability to track your daily streaks as well as earned stars however, most of the time those things won’t show up on the app so you can’t really track your streak or compare yourself with other users if you like competition. I reached out to them about this problem and they were responsive, but their solution did not work. The last time they did any updates on this app was two years ago so they are not keeping up on. It’s usability from the development side, which is a bad sign for long-term usability as phones update and change. I also don’t like the fact that there’s no way to practice conversational Portuguese through this app.

Development has some way to go, but the content is great
When I first started using the app, I ran into so many bugs and crashes that it felt unusable. But I contacted the developers and they gave me an alternative password. I guess log into some sort of beta version? And it’s working much better. It crashes much less frequently, but it still does crash every now and then. Or it will prompt me to re-login in error so I have to reboot the app And then it remembers that I’m still logged in. But the content is great. The featured speakers are great. I don’t think I’ve found a better option for learning Portuguese with a Portuguese accent instead of a Brazilian accent if your goal is to go to Portugal. This was super important for me because I find the Portuguese accent so hard to understand and hear. I feel like I’m learning French all over again. I can only hear a third of the syllables being said. But anyways, good app. Just needs a little more work on the development side.

Development has a long way to go
This app has a long way to go before it would be, in my opinion, ready for release. But it is already released. It crashes frequently. It regularly loses track of which lesson you left off at, even occasionally losing progress on some of your lessons so that you have to repeat them. It’s also pretty slow. I’m not sure what the back end on this app is, but it’s like they tried to retrofit a website into an app, which is always the wrong approach. Apple Pencil use with this app is extremely buggy. And that’s very frustrating because for many people like myself, writing is critical to comprehension. Make the app for the apps sake. Make it self-sufficient. I’m paying $17 a month to be able to learn with a Portuguese accent, but for this level of bugs, this app is only worth about eight dollars a month. If that. So I will not keep the subscription much longer. I guess I’ll just have to learn with a Brazilian accent and do Duolingo. Because their app is flawless. The reason it gets two stars instead of one star is that, despite the extremely poor functionality of the app itself, the content is quite good. The style of teaching is quite good. The creators of practice Portuguese are doing themselves a disservice by trying to package great teaching into terrible coding. It never pays to save a buck by hiring coders in another country FYI! Seems like that might be what they’re doing here? Either that or someone who is not the best coder is trying to DIY? The joke about full stack developers being bad at both front and back end comes to mind, lol. Hire professionals! In year 2025, there’s no good excuse to have a poorly functioning app.

Exceptional
I was a bit hesitant hesitant to use this app, but European Portuguese is limited in its options when learning. I took a chance and I am not disappointed! The app is amazing. It starts off building a foundation, explaining the words and reviewing your pronunciation. It gives great additional information on when it would be appropriate to use and has so many additional resources of videos, podcasts, and review sheets. It contains multiple people to hear a variety of different native speakers to assist you. I am spending hours learning in this app and I am very impressed at what I already am learning.

The best app for learning European Portuguese
200 million people speak Brazilian Portuguese, and there and plenty of resources for learning it. European Portuguese… not so much. Given the limited apps for learning the language, you might want to forgo learning it. Don’t! Practice Portuguese is a phenomenal resource for learning the language. There are smart flash cards, lessons, videos, short audio, and more. It’s structured in a way that makes it easy to work through units while allowing you to easily skip around or answer questions about pronunciation, grammar, social norms, etc. I pay for the upgrade and it’s worth every penny. Support is helpful and quick too!

Too glitchy and repetitive
The app constantly crashes, or takes forever to get to the next question. It makes studying an absolute drag. For the price they charge, it’s really not good enough

This app is wonderful for those who intend on moving to Portugal, have no prior knowledge of European Portuguese, and need to learn the language. There are so many other platforms that teach Brazilian Portuguese, but only few that teach European Portuguese, and even less that offer lessons in a fun and thorough format.
This app combines not only logically organized language lessons, but also videos to listen to conversation, quizzes to test your knowledge, smart review to continually test you on what you’ve learned until you master them, and information about Portuguese culture. This app is very motivating and I enjoy using it to learn the language.
One thing I would love to eventually see in the app is scheduled notifications to remind me to do a daily lesson/smart review. Otherwise, I love this app!

Entspricht genau meinem Lernstil
Mit dieser App lassen sich Vokabeln und Grammatik auf unterhaltsame Weise lernen und vertiefen. Mit Hör- und Sprechübungen sowie individuellem Übungsteil. Zwei Sterne Abzug gibt es mittlerweile sind es -4), weil der Server doch etwas schwach ist und zu Stoßzeiten Übungen überhaupt nicht mehr geladen werden. An dieser Stelle sollte der Hersteller aufrüsten. Es ist noch schlimmer geworden, mittlerweile muss ich mich häufig erneut anmelden, weil mein Abo-Status nicht verifiziert werden kann und ich darauf hin ausgeloggt werde. Ich habe weder Zeit noch Lust mich über euren Server zu ärgern und bin kurz davor, mein Abo zu kündigen.

Toller Einstieg
Es ist gar nicht so einfach eine App zu finden, die europäisches Portugiesisch auf einem derart hohem Niveau vermittelt. Ja, die App ist langsam. Und die Pop-up Fenster nerven. Auch das UI ist nicht unbedingt intuitiv. Aber über all das sehe ich hinweg, wenn ich die Sprache vernünftig lernen kann und das gelingt auf jeden Fall mit dieser App. Dafür halte ich den Preis für moderat. Man muss es immer in Relation zu der Zielgruppe sehen und die ist nun mal nicht so groß wie die für brasilianisches Portugiesisch. Allerdings wäre eine weitere Entwicklung sehr wünschenswert.

Inhalt gut - App verbesserungsbedürftig
Der Inhalt ist gut strukturiert mit sinnvollen Übungen. Die Lektionen sind sinnvoll aufgebaut und man hat das Gefühl, Fortschritte zu machen. Leider ist die App wohl etwas veraltet, was den Lernspaß etwas dämpft. Man hat lange Ladescreens und alte Meldungen werden immer wieder neu abgespielt mit Sound. Das Layout an sich ist gut, aber ich wünsch mir gerne eine zeitgemäße optimierung für Mobilgeräte, wenn man schon für das Abo bezahlt.
