The PPH App Turns Good Reporting into a Poor Experience
The Press Herald does a good job reporting local, regional, and national news. The App is ill conceived and reflects poorly on the reporting. The PPH product people need to take a fresh look at there customer experience , consider additional revenue opportunities leveraging otherwise good content, and offer a much better experience.

Keep old apps
Clicked on the new app and it brought to the sunjournal. Tried clicking on the other newspapers and it was unable to find the link.

Intrusive Ads
The primary feature of this new update are ads that automatically run on the top of the screen and make it impossible to read in full screen mode like it was a genuine print copy. It’s so disappointing to see an ostensibly non profit company flagrantly downgrade its product for their subscribers in this way.

More ads = negative experience
The most current “improved” update now includes a annoying banner ad at the top of each page. Although the page can be enlarged to read the articles without the ad, seeing ads within the body of the page is enough advertising for subscribers. It’s tempting me to go back to a print version.
Really badly deigned app
crashes, inability to refresh to the updated edition of the paper , poor user interface all together , not much good to say. Come on PPH you can do better
Uses Storage
I have to watch this app because it uses GBs of storage even though I NEVER download the newspaper. I always read on line and have checked my options. It is frustrating to have to delete the app an reinstall it to get rid of garbage.
What bug fixes?
I keep expecting an app update that will allow the iPad version to function as well as the iPhone version. No luck so far. Reopening yesterday’s paper prevents opening today’s. There is no refresh button - , instead, getting to today requires powering down and a very long wait to reopen.
Print is unclear, page controls gone
What was wrong with the last version of this app? It had easily accessible page turning controls at the top (they are now gone) and the print was always sharp. Half the the time, when I zoom in with this new version, the print is out of focus/unclear.
Update removed too many features
The recent update adds some interface improvements, but also removed two frequently used and very useful features including persistent display of the time and the ‘Page x of x’ in the header. Please restore these features as soon as possible.
The previous version with the black P was better
Please give us back the previous app with the black P. It was fine as it was. This new one is frustrating. The pages seem to get snagged up, page turning isn’t as easy: it just isn’t as good.
Not an improvement
The new app is not as user friendly as the old one. New is not always better.
Not liking new format
I do not like the new format when the app was updated in May 2023. It appears less than full page on my iPad and is difficult to see the articles prior to expanding them. This was not an improvement.
This app crashes constantly.
January 2023: Upgraded to iPhone 13 Pro Max. Cannot swipe to change pages without this app crashing. I have to reload the app and can’t get past page 2 without navigating with the arrows at the top of the page or jumping to a page. Even with those alternatives, or heaven forbid I tap the body of the page with a finger, the app crashes.
My Original review, 2020: I downloaded this app today, and really wanted to give this a shot. Whether scrolling, zooming, turning the page, or just reading a still image of the e-Paper, this app has just crashed (evaporates from screen, requiring a re-launch) and I have to find the paper and the page again. Why? Pros: it looks really crisp on my iPhone 12 Max Pro. Cons: haven’t been able to read a full page without it crashing; I can get maybe 4 minutes of reading in at the most.

Nice Format, Nice App
This app works great on my phone. I like the true Newspaper format. Makes it more enjoyable to read than a web page.

Works well enough when working. Can’t get through an entire paper without it crashing. It had crashed on every single use so far.
Get Some Good Tech Folks - You Need Them
When you get towards the end of the ‘paper’, every time you close an article the paper closes. If you want to continue, you have to start over again and leaf through every page. Frustrating!
