About
Private Notes is a private, encrypted note-taking app built on the Nostr protocol. Your notes are encrypted on your device before being synced through decentralized relays — no company, no server, no cloud provider can read them. Only you, with your nsec (and optionally your PIN), hold the key.
Unlike traditional notes apps that store your data on centralized servers, Private Notes uses Nostr — an open, decentralized protocol. Your identity is a cryptographic key pair (nsec/npub), not an email or password. Notes are encrypted locally, signed, and published to relays you choose. When you open the app, notes are fetched and decrypted on your device. Nothing leaves your device unencrypted.
Two-layer encryption: Your nsec (private key) is stored in secure hardware-backed storage (iOS Keychain). For added security, you can optionally set a PIN that adds an extra encryption layer — even if someone obtains your nsec, they still can't read your notes without the PIN. The PIN never touches disk and lives only in memory while the app is open.
Your keys, your data: We never see your nsec or your PIN. There's no "forgot password" — because there's no password. Just your keys. Back up your nsec securely (password manager, offline backup) — without it, your account cannot be recovered.
Choose your relays: Private Notes lets you select which Nostr relays to use. Use multiple relays for redundancy — if one goes offline, your notes are still available on others. You're not locked into any single provider.
