About
Pulse is a heart-rate trainer built around one idea: red means you are in Zone 2.
Zone 2 is the easy, conversational effort where your aerobic base is built. It is easy to drift out of without noticing. Pulse shows your live heart rate on a single gauge, turns it red when you are in Zone 2, and keeps a running total for the week.
TWO WAYS TO MEASURE
• Any Bluetooth heart-rate strap or armband that uses the standard Heart Rate service. Pulse picks your chest strap over a nearby watch, reconnects by itself if the signal drops, and keeps reading with your phone locked.
• Apple Watch: start a Zone 2 workout on your wrist with no strap at all. The gauge is on the watch, and it taps your wrist when you drift out of the zone.
DURING A WORKOUT
• Live heart rate, zone and Zone 2 time on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island.
• Gentle drift alerts: one sound and buzz when you have been out of Zone 2 for a while, never a stream of beeps, and one confirmation when you are back.
• Pause, keep going, and a workout saved even if the app is closed mid-session.
• A cardio timer or a stopwatch, inside the ring.
YOUR WEEK
• A weekly Zone 2 goal you set, with the week starting on the day you choose.
• Your longest Zone 2, your average Zone 2 per workout, and trends over a week, a month, a year or all time.
• Cardiac drift for longer sessions, and a resting heart-rate trend that can tell you when you need more recovery.
• Log a workout by hand when you trained without a sensor.
• Watch-face complications for the week's Zone 2 minutes.
YOUR ZONES
• Your own Zone 2, in beats per minute, from a lactate test, a ventilatory threshold or a DFA-α1 estimate. Pulse uses it exactly.
• Or zones from your age (Tanaka, 208 − 0.7 × age), your own maximum heart rate, or heart-rate reserve (Karvonen) with your resting heart rate.
• A zone calculator that shows every zone in beats per minute.
APPLE HEALTH
Pulse works with Apple Health. If you turn it on, Pulse saves each workout with its heart-rate samples to Health, and reads your resting heart rate for the recovery trend. Apple Watch workouts are saved to Health and the Fitness app too. Health data stays on your devices and is never used for advertising.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
No account and no sign-in. Your history is stored on your iPhone. Pulse has no server and no analytics of its own.
PULSE PRO
Pulse is free with a small banner ad, and records every session in full. Pulse Pro adds the analysis, for sessions you've already done too:
• DFA-α1 from a chest strap's beat-to-beat intervals: live during a workout, charted over each session, with an LT1 estimate when a session earns one
• Each session's heart-rate trace against your Zone 2 band, and how clean its beats were
• No ads
• CSV export and full JSON backup, and sync through a file in iCloud Drive
• Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets for your weekly Zone 2
Measuring, workouts, time in Zone 2, your history, the Apple Watch app and Apple Health stay free.
Pulse Pro is $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year (prices vary by region). Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage and cancel it in your Apple Account settings.
Pulse is a training aid, not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition. Talk to your doctor before starting a new training plan.
