Watch Double-pinch feature?

I use this app while sailing my OTB catamaran, so often wet and using both hands. With Apples Double-pinch feature now on their watch (double-touch thumb & forefinger), this would be an amazing feature to add to the GUN so I can start/sync the countdown timer for a race start. With wet hands/screen tapping the watch face doesn’t always work.
Thoughts on adding this feature?

Please check that you have enabled location/GPS access to allow background updates and that you are displaying an advanced timer part of Silver or higher for best experience.

it’s great except for one thing

i love this app, but when i hit finish and close the app, i don’t want it magically reopening and hijacking my watch and phone.

i force close the app? doesn’t matter, it just loads up again even though i’m miles away from the water.

the alerts, the syncing, readouts… i love it all. just please stop with the unwanted reopening of the app.

add a button that says something like “done racing for the day?” and the app stays closed until the next time i open it.

it’s so annoying i’ve deleted app until this is fixed. this unwanted feature broke me. i’m done

Can’t seem to close the app once running

The app does the job, but I can’t seem to close it on the Apple Watch, and it drains the battery quickly

Could be good

Same issue as Soldout2running. It used to be good but now the start line feature doesn’t work for the Silver subscription (although from the description it looks like it should) I’m cancelling my subscription. A shame.

I like it but it doesn’t have an off switch as far as I can see. Uses up too much power. Help!

Phenomenal Potential but…

I used this a couple of years ago so I could count down the time for race starts and it worked well and it was free so expectations matched. Just purchased a silver subscription expecting a distance and time to the line. I also expected to be able to drive by Race Committee boat and pin of the line and ping each end but was surprised to find out those functions were not in my subscription. This is potentially a 5 star app if pinging the line, distance and time to line were included. Unfortunately they are not with silver subscription. Please include those functions and it would be a great inexpensive app for every weekly sail boat racer. I would pay for the gold subscription at $2.99 a month but am afraid I won’t get what I need and it will be too late once I’ve already paid. Therefore, I recommend a 7 day free trial so subscribers can test out the functions before fully committing to paying monthly or quarterly. Again, great potential and a large number of boats with antiquated chart plotters need your app. I look forward to seeing it developed fully.

Mostly good

I downloaded this app because of the watch app and it’s mostly good and has improved over the years. The one very bothersome aspect is if you hit the Action button on the Ultra by accident or if you just want to close the app, it keeps relaunching itself, even after a forced close. I would have given it five stars if not for this.

Nice Timer Function; But That’s It

I’ve used the app for timing regatta starts for over a year and was curious about using the other features so upgraded to Gold for a few months and about a dozen races this summer. Unfortunately I found the other features glitchy and unintuitive.

For example, if you keep the timer visible to monitor SOG and COG the other features are buried on a separate menu page making it a clumsy process to get to while racing; potentially useful stuff like wind shift and Live Map are hard to read and sometimes don’t show up.

There’s no real description or information on a lot of the features or how to use them. For example what is the difference between the Compass feature and the Smart View? And why can’t I use True North instead of magnetic?

Dropping marks is also a challenge, the Race History sometimes works sometime not. The Stop Racing process is a joke as is the always on location tracking. Yes I know I can use Siri to do it. But I don’t want to.

Honestly, it’s a great feature set, and I tried hard to use the upgraded Gold features but I feel that they were dumped into the app and not rigorously tested on the water in actual regattas.

I’m giving Race Master 3 stars since the Timer function is very good and I plan to keep using it, but I cancelled the Gold subscription and cannot currently recommend it.

Thank you for a thoughtful review. The SmartView is intended as a start at trying to address one of the challenges you highlight; it will automatically change view depending on if you are pre-start or not. Under Settings in the app there is a possibility to change the setting for “Magnetic Heading” (when disabled, COG is relative to true north). I’ll keep refining the app, maybe someday it may work better for your needs. ⛵️

Why won’t it stay closed?

Works well during regattas. But when I’m done and off the boat I force close on both watch and phone and it continues to open on watch. Very frustrating

The design goal is for the app to remain active for 2 hours (a compromise where it will be active long enough to record many “around the buoy” races). Please look at intro for guidance and use the “No more racing” toggle in app settings for the app to shutdown immediately.

Terrible for racing

No intuitive way to use on Apple Watch Ultra - start screen fine but no way to get marks positioned, set wind easily or get a decent course (heading lift screen) customised .

Could be really easy to make it better but can never be used as race watch

Manually add waypoints

Is there a way to manually add and store waypoints for future races? Our local clubs have placed permanent marks for racing. I have the gps coordinates and looking for a way to add and save marks then be able to hit a go to function after each rounding. Only Garmin seems to have this ability and it’s so complicated every sailor hates it! Thank you for all your work on this. It really offers a lot of great things.

Thank you for your question. I will add a section on this on the info page in the app soon. There are a few options: Race Master understands many variants of the GPX file format and is registered in your phone to support this: you can import a GPX file with marks by tapping on the GPX file and select Race Master. To manually edit coordinates please use the “Edit Marks” page and after e.g. projecting a mark with 0 distance selecting this mark for editing. You can then tap on the blue coordinates to edit. Remember that you can select GPS Coordinates format under settings in app to your preference before editing. You can also consider sharing a mark with others in your club by tapping the share button when reviewing a mark under “Edit Marks”. Please reach out over email if you have further questions.

Use it on my watch. Countdown display freezes but the count continues behind the scenes. Tap on it and the display jumps to the correct time. Glitch. Also sometimes keeps running even though you’ve reset. Display goes back to 5 (or whatever) but the count continues. Glitch.

Seems to work but I can’t shut it off

The basic functionality of the app seems to work. I have only tested it in an open area while walking since I’m not sailing today.

The GPS resolution appears to be about 5 meters with clear sky so that’s good enough for me for now.

The “time early / late” to line seems to be glitchy. Setting the TC and Pin was easy enough. A “pin set” positive feedback would be a nice addition.

I see no way to delete “races” without deleting all my data. It would be nice to be able to click on specific races and delete them.

My biggest concern is that I can’t seem to completely shut the app off even when I follow the directions. The timer remains persistent on my Apple Watch even when I kill the app on my phone.

It will be interesting to test the app on the water to see if it behaves any differently than walking around on a field.

Thank you for your review! * Deleting single races is possible in the “Race History” view by swiping left in the list. * The watch app is designed to turn off automatically after 2hr (unless you change under settings on the Watch). If you select “No more racing” the app should turn off immediately. Please reach out via email (see on app settings page) if you have issues! Enjoy ⛵️

It’s a great app, but I can’t turn it off - How do you shut it off?

It’s a great app, but I don’t possess the ability to turn it off. I shut it down on the iPhone and the iwatch and it starts up automatically immediately. Very frustrating as I’m no longer racing and I don’t want to look at the RaceTimer all the time. How do you turn it off?

Best sailing app ever

I’ve been using this app for one design racing. I use the timer on my Apple watch and it’s terrific. The app is updated regularly with great customer service and troubleshooting.
If your class allows, it’s got very nice start line graphics and speed and CMG stats.
Get the app and the Gold subscription.

Apple Watch Ultra - can't stop the app

... exept by deinstalling. So I did, what I have to do. The window "settings" to close the app (no more racing...) is no longer available at the Apple Watch Ultra - and even at my old watch 4. The most right window is a MOB-window

Problem fixed - upgraded from 1 to 5 stars

Great features but

Like the watch and race timer functions but my iwatch keeps switching off and requires pin code to open again. Cannot get the timer to stay on and it disappears frequently during countdown. It must be able to override screen off whilst app is running, as it’s frustrating to have to reopen app multiple times during a sequence

Great race app!

Love this app!! It is so racer oriented! Having the ability to add or subtract a second or minute is so helpful when you miss the gun. Question—I went to use it today and don’t see the option to enter an ‘exact start time’. Did something change? I no longer have the “settings” page on my watch.
