About
How are you getting to work today?
RadPendler works out the same trip four different ways and puts them side by
side: by bike, by bike and train, by car, and by public transport. Four cards,
four travel times, a star on whichever one wins today — on one screen, no
scrolling.
Built for one real commute and then made general — and it tells you what it
doesn't know instead of guessing.
THE FOUR WAYS
• Cycling, in variants: fastest, shortest, optimal, quietest, low-traffic. From
several BRouter profiles and from Apple Maps, scored by traffic lights, major
roads crossed and metres spent alongside them
• Bike + train: the app finds the stations itself, rides you there, takes the
train, and rides on
• Car: optimal, fastest, shortest or few traffic lights — every route Apple
Maps offers, not just the quickest
• Public transport: the scheduled connection with changes, platforms and
real-time data
TRAFFIC LIGHTS THAT COUNT
A cycling time without traffic lights is a cycling time for an empty country.
RadPendler pulls traffic signals and major roads along the route from
OpenStreetMap, counts the junctions and draws them on the map. Travel time =
distance ÷ rolling speed + waiting time per light — both of them yours to set.
RECORD YOUR RIDES, AND THE APP LEARNS FROM THEM
A button next to the trip you picked records what you actually ride: distance,
speed, every stop, the elevation profile, and what you rode on.
After that the app uses your numbers: your measured average replaces the
estimate, and every junction you really stood at costs what it cost you the
next time you plan. Recording pauses by itself when you stand still for a
while, and picks up again as soon as you move.
RAIN WHERE YOU'RE RIDING
Not "40 % chance of rain", but rain at the points along your route at the
minutes you'll be there — from the Deutscher Wetterdienst nowcast and from
Open-Meteo. The radar images play over the map from now to two hours ahead,
with your position marker moving along.
BIKES ON BOARD, YOUR CALL
No timetable reliably knows whether your bike may come along. What VBB
guarantees is marked "bike yes". Everything else is "unconfirmed" — and still
gets suggested, with the caveat attached, instead of quietly disappearing. In
the settings you set each line to yes, no, or open.
COUNTDOWN TO LEAVING
Top right, the clock runs down to when you leave — departure minus your
getting-ready time, not to the departure itself. The pill changes colour with
it, from green to deep red. Warnings arrive as notifications, even when the app
is closed.
NATIONWIDE, GERMAN AND ENGLISH
In Berlin and Brandenburg, VBB answers — it's more accurate there and it's the
only one that says, train by train, whether bikes may come. Everything beyond
that is answered by Transitous, the volunteer-run MOTIS instance on the
nationwide DELFI dataset. You switch language in the menu, no restart.
iPAD AND APPLE WATCH
On iPad everything sits side by side: addresses, time selection, the four cards
and the whole timeline on the left — the map at full height on the right. On
the watch: the same countdown, the trip with all its legs, the four categories
to switch between — and whatever you pick there, the iPhone follows.
PREFERENCES, NOT RULES
Order of the modes, route variant, what a change of train is worth, how much
rain it takes before the bike belongs on the train — all adjustable, each with
a sensible default.
YOUR ADDRESSES STAY YOURS
The app ships without addresses and contains none. What you enter stays on your
devices and in your own iCloud; it goes to no server belonging to this project,
because there isn't one. No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no ads. Open
source (MIT).
Data sources: VBB, Transitous/MOTIS on the DELFI dataset, Apple Maps, BRouter
and Overpass on OpenStreetMap data (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL),
Deutscher Wetterdienst and Open-Meteo.
All times without guarantee.
