What's New in Railfan Copilot

v2.7.3, Build (6)

September 7, 2026

New: STB Rail Lines overlay The map now shows official rail line data from the Surface Transportation Board's National Rail Network - the same data source railroads and regulators use. Lines are color-coded by owning railroad, with double-track shown heavier. Tap any line to see the owner, subdivision, yard, and track count. New: Abandoned and Railbanked Lines overlay See where rail lines have been abandoned or railbanked (converted to trails) right on the map - abandoned lines shown in grey, railbanked/rails-to-trails in green. Tap a line for the railroad, STB docket number, county/state, length, and key dates, with a direct link to the official docket record. Smarter auto-fill for spots and saved locations When you log a new Community Spot or Saved Location, we now automatically fill in the railroad and subdivision based on the nearest official rail line, with a "Nearest track" hint so you know where the info came from. Fixed: Community Sightings showing duplicate info Fixed a bug where every sighting in the Community Sightings feed could show the same details as the most recently posted sighting instead of its own. Each sighting now correctly displays its own data. Also in this release Continued iOS feature parity: Trip Log, Station Board, Log Transmission, yard detail sheets, Photo Enhancer, tagged photos, Community Spots, a rebuilt Webcams section, native map performance improvements, voice dictation, and per-agency settings. A friendly review prompt after completing a purchase. General stability and bug fixes.

Can’t find fright trains

I can only get Amtrak trains and it won’t show other trains

Needs More Issues Fixed

I like the app, although it’s in beta there comes flaws such as
1. Less Radio Frequencies
2. Bad at Defining CN Train Symbols
And 3. Not Enough Radio Feeds :(
This app needs A TON of improvement because of this. Sincerly, -TILE2026

Response from developer

A lot of these issues have been fixed. If there is data that is missing or incorrect, I am very open to correcting it as long as the information is provided to correct with. Radio feeds are an issue that can not be resolved without spending hugh sums of money. The two sites that have API's for radio feeds will not provide one or want 5000+ dolloars for a API to hook into.

Promising, yet freight tracking needs clarity..

Hi Ronald,

I purchased Railfan Copilot Pro on iOS today.

The Live Train Map works correctly for Amtrak.

However, selecting Union Pacific or BNSF results in “0 trains” nationwide, even when viewing the entire western U.S.

The App Store description says the app tracks “real-time … freight train positions.”

Is freight tracking currently available on iOS? If so, is it limited to certain railroads or regions?

Thanks.

Response from developer

Thanks for the feedback. This app relies heavily on community involvement. Because I do not live in an area with high UP or BNSF traffic, I haven't been able to post frequent sightings myself. However, I have recently revamped this entire activity to help drive better community engagement. While a competitor app uses a similar crowdsourced setup, accessing unsecured, real-time freight traffic data is notoriously difficult unless I implement an ATSC interface—which carries technical uncertainties. I am committed to improving the user experience and am working hard to get the app exactly where it needs to be. Best, Ron
