Wish it was better

The movement in the game is atrocious. Maybe actual controller support would make it better, but touch controls are bad.

Response from developer

Try to switch to arrows in the menu if you don’t like joystick.

Seems interesting

I cannot stress how much I wish for diagonal controlled movement. The straight up/down/left/right feels clunky. Especially when tiny little rocks will stop you in your tracks. Some degree of instruction would also be valuable. Like, it starts you at a campfire and you can risk the dark and explore for more. But what makes more pop up? Is it time? One level I had 4 fires, and another I never got past 1. Not sure if RNG or if I am missing something. I’m intrigued, but not enough yet to spend anything.

(Update) Gave a few more tries. It’s one thing to release a ‘hard’ game. It’s another to release a broken game and try to say it’s a hard when it doesn’t work. I was laughing hysterically a moment ago in a game because I cleared all the ghosts and literally every other enemy on the screen, including the boss, was stuck on rocks and forest. I love pixel games. I love rouge-likes. I love supporting indie devs. This game needs a LOT of work, and a dev responsive to feedback. I saw responses on Reddit. The four way controls are the single biggest complaint, even above the invisible barriers, but dev wants to stick with it. People give feedback to help you with your product. Sticking with a design that no one likes or wants because it makes it ‘hard’ is not a decision that will be successful for you. You have a really great start here. Take the feedback and make adjustments, and it could be a good game. As it stands now, it is not.

Thanks for the honest feedback — hard to hear, but genuinely useful. Version 1.0.4 is addressing the two biggest issues: the joystick is getting a redesign to better reflect 4-directional movement, and you’ll also have the option to switch to arrow controls. The enemy stuck poblem is fixed too in 1.0.4— the game now monitors off-screen enemies and refreshes any that get stuck. Appreciate you giving it more chances. We will also more address 4-directional movement on appstore page to filter people for who 4-directional movement is no go.

Really fun!

Fantastic horde survivor game with diagonal controls. It feels like I’m playing a reverse bullet hell on a gameboy. I like the pixel graphics, the old school feel of the controls, the different characters, and the overall challenge of the game. It gets addicting trying to reach new high scores and move up the leaderboards. The old school up down left right controls make the game feel unique to me and adds a bit to the challenge. The devs are also responsive to feedback which is always nice to see. I would recommend it to fans of the genre and for people who don’t mind the diagonal controls.

Thank you so much!

Bummer

Was very excited to try this out but, I lost interest in the first 5 minutes of playing. Thankfully you can demo it for free. I know it’s intentional, but the movement is terrible. Trying to navigate around the map is just frustrating. Not in a fun way, but in an annoying way. I would love to try the game again if movement was ever addressed, but the Dev seems to be set on this is the way they want it, and that is unfortunate for me.

Response from developer

Hi. We will add possibility to replace joystick with four arrows, which could help some people and we will address it much more on appstore page to filter people for who 4 diagonal movement is no go.

Has potential, needs some tuning

I really want to like this game more. I enjoy survivor games and this one has an interesting campfire mechanic. I wish there were more instructions about how some of the mechanics work, or what the purpose of the gold is for. Some people may not enjoy the directional movement, but it doesn’t bother me too much. Overall it’s a great way to kill some time, but the replayability is questionable until they release more content.

Hi. Thanks for feedback. What content we should prioritize now to reach better replayability? New heroes or items? Maybe more achievements? Feel free to answer on support@returntopixhell.com

Has Potential

The game certainly has potential but it is pretty limited on content at the moment. The map terrain is extremely restrictive and gets you killed far too often.

Response from developer

Hi! Thanks for seeing the potential! This is just the initial release, and We have a lot of new content and features planned for upcoming updates. The restrictive terrain is intentionally designed to be a tough hazard, but We constantly fine-tuning the balance.

Getting stuck on everything.

Is the point to find invisible walls to get stuck on and not be able to move diagonally? I can't walk through the forest? At least make the small objects on the ground that stop you more obvious. Or their invisible walls smaller.

Response from developer

Hi! The movement is intentionally designed to be high-precision and challenging, so everything is working as intended. However, you make a good point about visibility. We will make those small stones bigger in the next update so they are easier to spot.
