Works not bad!

I think you can use the tech disc on this app? I was getting exact numbers. Then I switched to a regular disc and it took sometime to get speeds.

Update: It still took a lot of tries for me. I throw an average around 63-65 mph on the Tech Disc and this app said I threw 68 mph. That would be nice but I don’t think it’s accurate.

I don’t know how it works but maybe the wide lens needs to be used. I’ll continue to update my review as this app updates and enhances. I really hope the accuracy and experience gets better!

Response from developer

Hi! I really appreciate the feedback! If you have a throw that you think was the incorrect speed, please press the "Report Issue" button on the throw details screen. That allows me to diagnose what happened and improve the app for everyone.

Garbage app

All this app does is say “waiting for placement” while simultaneously heating my phone to the approximate temperature of lava. Not one feature works.

Response from developer

Hi, I'm really sorry that you've had a rough experience so far. If you're willing to keep trying, I suspect the issue might be a compass permission not being granted. Please check this setting: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services (scroll all the way to the bottom) > Compass Calibration, check that it's set to ON. If you are still having issues feel free to email me support@sarulian.com. I respond quickly and will get you up and running.

Free Trial need testing

The app seems great, but there’s some finicky parts of the app that take a few throws to understand: audio prompts for throwing, data display only shows after session, heat defo bugs out the app. I tried it out in a noisy outside space and got caught in a loop. I suspect it was because I hit my 5 throw limit, but it might have been the heat as well. I get that you want to get the revenue, but I wasn’t really able to assess the app to know if it’s worth the 25$/year

Unable to estimate speed

That title is about all I hear out of this thing.

Does what it says it can do

Awesome app that works as intended. Had a few tech disc/ RipReader sessions and the speeds were lining up within 1mph approx and even the RPMs seemed to be on point. I have a feeling this app is going to be as useful as UDisc to most players who are looking to improve their form/ distance. Well done

Great concept but not ready

I really want this to work but it just doesn’t yet. It regularly fails to detect speed and almost never detects spin correctly. Hopefully it continues to improve but I worry it is too limited by the phone hardware.

Great budget tool for analyzing disc throw speed and spin

I never write reviews but I’m loving this app. I had a Techdisc and I honestly like this better. The Techdisc is so pricey I would only throw it into a net. As a result it was hard to really see how the throw flew. This measures the speed and spin and then logs the throw and lets you measure the actual landing distance. I also really like how it has a thumbnail showing the exact disc. Really well thought out and as far as I can tell right in line with the Techdisc numbers I’m used to seeing. Great tool for anyone and I’m going to recommend it to my disc golf league mates.

Best Disc Golf Throw Analyzer

One-of-a-kind app. Has incredibly useful functions. Developer support and responsiveness is top notch.

Perfect

I was impressed with how well this app worked. Has lots of great features! I love being able to throw any disc I want to measure instead of always being stuck with one like tech disc. Not to mention the affordability vs tech disc.

Great Tool

This is an amazing tool to help analyze your throw without the large price tag of a tech disc! Additionally, once you get a good amount of throws logged you can get some good insights as to how you throw your individual discs. For instance, I had some disc choice biases for my distance drivers but after looking at my throws I realized I had a clear bomber disc that I was not utilizing as much as I should be!!

Had hopes…

Saw the review on BlitzDG and was excited. Downloaded it and all it does is tell me to put my phone face down on the ground…. And I wait…and wait…. and nothing happens. Maybe it’s an app to get me to stretch my back by leaning over?

**update** did the recommended fix that was on discord and it worked. I also tracked with my tech disc and Rip Reader has pretty close to the same numbers for speed. This app does have a feature for distance but those numbers did not match my Tech Disc numbers. I used up my 5 free throws. I don’t want to pay for something else since the TD cost enough. Thanks for the cool app. I can see how it can be helpful doing field work.

Update: version 1.4.0 is now available with this bug fixed. If you get a chance to try it, I'd really appreciate it. If it's working for you now, I'd be grateful if you'd consider updating your review. --- Hi Sonquizzon, This is most likely a bug with permissions that I am fixing in the next release. For now if you check both of these settings, it should fix your issue. (Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > RipReader > Allow location access while using the app) and (Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services (scroll all the way to the bottom) > Compass Calibration, check that it's set to ON.) Sorry about the inconvenience! Feel free to reach out to me at support@sarulian.com if you run into any more issues!

Does not work

It just captures everything but the discs and all your 5 free throws get wasted instantly because it records in 28 fps for some reason with terrible exposure settings that aren’t even picking up the disc.

Response from developer

Hey NovaaHD, sorry the discs didn't get picked up cleanly. Quick note on the 28 fps: that's actually normal. RipReader runs two parallel video streams, ~30 fps for disc detection and a separate 240 fps stream for the slow-motion analysis. So the recording rate isn't what's keeping the discs from being seen. The more likely culprits are capture conditions. Detection has a much harder time when: • Light is uneven or low (indoor, shaded, dusk) • The background is busy (moving trees, patterned fence, foot traffic behind the lane) If you'd like another shot in outdoor daylight with a plain background, shoot me a note at support@sarulian.com and I'll take a look at a clip personally and make sure you're set up to keep testing. Best, Sarulian

Great tool

Really easy app to use, and great immediate feedback from the developer to fix a couple of issues with settings. Only thing I could ask for is for the free trial to give a few more than 5 throws. It would be nice to get the hang of the system a bit more before committing to buying.

iphone 17e issue?

current bug where it doesnt appear to be finding the camera to measure throws? at least i dont see anything (black screen) when i peak at my phone while its supposed to be measuring my throw speed. really wanting this app to work as it looks promising.

Accessible compared to alternatives

Works well, gives instant feedback for field work, doesn’t have all the features of a tech disc but it is way more accessible and still give a lot of great info

Easy to use, fast improvement

I’ve been trying to figure out which discs actually match my arm speed, and RipReader has been super helpful. I looked at Tech Disc, but it’s pretty expensive so this was a great alternative.

It gave me a clearer sense of what actually belongs in my bag and added real data to my field work instead of just guessing. Also great for dialing in stock yardages.

Big shoutout to the developer too! I reported a bug and it was fixed the next day. Super responsive.

Solid app if you’re trying to understand your distances and improve your disc selection. Excited to see where it goes 👍

Fantastic for field practice

I’m a 6-month novice and have found that my recent work with RipReader has helped me to monitor my work at improving my throws. Measuring speed & distance - especially incremental speed & distance - is very useful as I practice my form and try new techniques. I get meaningful feedback on this work and it feels great when you break distance and speed records. There were a few times when practicing where I thought about skipping RipReader but working without it felt like I was missing important information so I’ve always ended up using it. It’s quite easy to use and I feel like the accuracy is also very good. I really love the disc library and lookup feature. Highly recommended!

Best Disc Golf stats app!

I’ve been waiting for an app like this for years! Simple to use. Great job gauging distance and speed. Just makes sense.
