About
Roll Shot Setting is a film photography companion for analog photographers who want to understand why their frames succeed or fail — and improve deliberately rather than by accident.
Digital cameras embed exposure data in every image file automatically. Film cameras record nothing. The shot is made, the roll is finished, days pass before development, more time passes before scanning, and the results arrive entirely disconnected from the decisions that created them. Most film photographers improve slowly across years of shooting without ever clearly understanding the relationship between what they did and what they got.
Roll Shot Setting closes that gap.
When a new roll is loaded, the photographer creates a roll entry: film stock from a built-in database of over two hundred emulsions, rated ISO to capture push or pull intention in a single number, camera body, lens, and location. Then as they shoot, they add frame notes for any frame worth tracking — aperture, shutter speed, how the scene was metered, and a short note on intent. Not every frame needs a note. Only the ones where the decision matters.
When scans arrive from the lab, they are imported and matched against the frame log in a side-by-side view. Each matched frame shows the scan alongside the aperture, shutter speed, and the note written at the time of shooting. The comparison between what was intended and what resulted is where the learning happens.
The archive shows every roll shot, organised by roll, by camera body, or by film stock. The film stock view shows all rolls shot on a given emulsion, sorted by development process — what Kodak Portra 400 looks like pushed one stop versus rated at box speed, based on the photographer's own shooting history rather than anyone else's. After a year of regular use, the statistics screen identifies patterns in exposure bias and shooting cadence that are invisible without the data.
A home screen widget shows the current active roll and how many frames have been logged.
