Inconsistent Ability to Connect
Radio connects to phone, but bug in software doesn’t allow connection with the radio.
Disappointed
Just got my 510 back from ICOM to have MMSI reset. This model is new but for some reason cannot reset MMSI. I tried RS-M500 but despite two sessions with ICOM America, the app still does not connect to radio. Very disappointed.
Could be a great app
Being able to use noise canceling headphones through my cell phone for radio communication would be great. Except this app disconnects from the radio whenever it’s not the primary focus of the phone such as when the screen locks or you get an alert or you switch to another app for some reason. It needs to work all the time to be useful. In the background. When the phone is locked. When you switch to another app. Until then, it’s marginally useful because it drops the radio connection in so many common cell phone scenarios.

I rely on the Icom radio app daily.
I have used this app almost every day for the last year and for hours on end. At this point I’ve got a pretty good understanding of it’s strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths- the RS-M500 App connects easily via WiFi to my M510 Icom marine radio while my phone is also connected via Bluetooth to my aircraft Bose A20 headset. I communicate with marine traffic right through my headset with noise canceling clarity. Even inside of a noisy Cessna the clarity is outstanding for the marine vessels listening to me.
Weaknesses- the WiFi often disconnects while using the app. I can be speaking one second and it disconnects the next. Then due to some glitch it won’t reconnect when prompted. It will show that the m510 is connected via WiFi but the app will not reconnect and I am unable to speak until I get everything set back up. I need to turn WiFi off in my phone settings, turn it back on, reconnect to the M510 WiFi and then reconnect the RS-M500 App. It can be very frustrating.
I use the app for 4-8 hours a day continuously and this glitch will happen 2-4 times a day. It takes about 30 seconds to reboot everything… it’s not a big deal but I think that should be fixed.
Also you can’t open any other apps or look at a pop-up window or notification of any kind. The RS-M500 app will disconnect if you do. It would be nice to be able to read a notification without losing connection to the radio.
All in all it’s a life saver of an app, super convenient and a lot cheaper than wiring a marine radio into the aircraft. I think most people won’t be as heavily reliant on the app as I am, so you may not even experience the glitches that I have. It’s really an original idea and well thought out app. I do recommend it.

Great concept!
Remote VHF over iPhone is a great idea. And allows intercom too.
Question to Developer:
Can I use this app to intercom to the hailer (SP-37 horn speaker) connected via the CT-M500? This is a very important feature to me. I want to talk through my iPhone to the hailer on deck.

A little disappointed
I had hoped that this would allow remote control and monitoring of features such as horn / hailer, monitor GPS and AIS data and other features of the MC510 … however it is very basic and whilst it allows you to change channels and use the intercom, it falls far short of what it could do … so only 2/5 stars as it lacks so many features as a “companion app”

Surprisingly effective
We are using this app for monitoring our VHF from the cockpit, on a temporary basis whilst we await the Icom remote handset which is on slow back order.
I had expected this to be a bit of a gimmick, but it is surprisingly effective: clear although volume a little on the low side.
I wouldn’t use this on a permanent basis for monitoring since that requires it to be in the foreground on the phone, and that eats battery and means I can’t use the phone for anything else. But temporarily it’s fine.
It is also usable as a remote handset used elsewhere on the boat.
So, overall I am more impressed than I expected to be! Thanks Icom.
