S612 Librarian is a single-screen sample editor and SysEx tool for the Akai S-612, the 1985 12-bit rack sampler. Plug a class-compliant USB-MIDI interface into your iPhone through any Lightning-to-USB or USB-C-to-USB adapter, point it at the S-612, and you have full bidirectional bank transfer in one app. WHAT IT DOES • Sends and receives sample banks to / from the Akai S-612 over USB-MIDI using the documented Akai SysEx protocol — WSB upload with ACK handshake on the way out, 128-block dump on the way back. • Reads any audio file iOS can decode: Files app, iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, your Apple Music library (DRM-free synced songs), and Voice Memos via Files. • Resamples non-destructively to any of the 37 valid S-612 sample rates (4 000–32 000 Hz, MIDI notes C2 through C5). The app sends the corresponding Note On / Off before each upload so the hardware latches the correct recording rate. • Trims the upload window with a pinch-zoom waveform editor: draggable start and end markers, tap-to-set-start with optional zero-crossing snap, ZOOM SEL / ZOOM FULL controls, and a two-tier major/minor time ruler with seconds labels along the bottom. • Picks a channel for stereo sources (L / M / R). Defaults to LEFT so phase-inverted material doesn't null under summation. • Auditions the selection through AVAudioPlayer with the S-612's 12-bit offset-binary quantisation applied — what you hear is what the rack will store. Audition retriggers automatically when the selection, rate, channel, or DSP state changes. • Applies DC offset removal and peak normalize destructively in place on the current selection only. Rate or channel change reverts to a clean re-derivation from the original float source. • Saves the result as a .sin file via the system file browser — pick any destination registered with iOS (Files, iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or any other file-provider extension). HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS • An Akai S-612 sampler. • A class-compliant USB-MIDI interface (iConnectivity, Roland UM-One mk2, MIDIPLUS, etc.). • Apple's Camera Connection Kit, or any Lightning-to-USB-A or USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, to host the interface from the iPhone. WORKFLOW 1. Bind the MIDI input and output endpoints from the dropdowns at the top of the panel. The LED dots go green when devices are bound. The app remembers your picks across launches. 2. Tap LOAD AUDIO and pick a sample from any of the four sections (recents, on-device Documents, Music library, Browse). 3. Pick the destination rate from the dropdown. 4. Drag the green start and red end markers on the waveform to set the upload window. 5. Tap Play to audition; the audition matches what the hardware will store. 6. Put the S-612 in receive mode and tap SEND. The waveform zooms to the selection and tints blue as the SysEx clocks out. 7. Receive in the other direction with the RECEIVE button; the waveform fills orange as blocks arrive. Save the result with SAVE .SIN. PRIVACY S612 Librarian makes no network requests. No analytics, no telemetry, no advertising, no data collection of any kind. The app reads only the audio files and Music library tracks you explicitly pick, and only to send them to your S-612. All in-app state lives entirely on your device and is removed when you uninstall the app. COMPATIBILITY S612 Librarian is an independent third-party companion app for an out-of-production hardware sampler.
