Clever, simple, effective
Only works in one orientation
I finally discovered that if I rotated the tablet so the charge port was down, the compass heading approached accuracy; with my phone compass confused, I’m assuming this app was close enough. (I’m in my RV, not sure how close to true North I’m facing.) As I rotate the iPad, Sailing Instruments’ compass went from 0 to 90 to 180 to 270 degrees off, depending on which edge was up.
Very puzzling, and dangerous to me.
Response from developer
Hey, the way the compass is designed to work is that if you aren’t moving it will take your magnetic reading but once you are moving it will switch to take your direction of travel as your course over ground. This is because when sailing the direction of travel isn’t necessarily where you are pointing due to tidal flow and leeway. What’s your RV use case? Maybe I can support it better. Also with the iPad if it’s not cellular it won’t have gps which could stop things working as expected.
