Sayling is a speaking course for German, Spanish, French and Italian. One round a day, said out loud, from the first minute.
Most language apps ask you to tap the right answer. Sayling asks you to say it — and then tells you what it predicted before you answered.
THE ROUND
A round is about ten cards. English comes up; you say the German, Spanish, French or Italian. When a phrase is new you build it from tiles first, then say it — you are never asked for something you have not been given.
If you would rather not speak — on a train, in an office, at 6am — one tap turns the whole sitting into tiles and choices, and the schedule underneath is identical.
MORE THAN ONE RIGHT ANSWER
The grader runs on your iPhone and accepts the ways a sentence can honestly be said: du or Sie, tú or usted, a different word order, a synonym, a different tense where the English allows both. The four courses carry 29,328 accepted alternative phrasings and 812 synonym groups. You are not being marked against one memorized string.
A SCHEDULE THAT SHOWS ITS WORK
Cards are scheduled by FSRS, an open spaced-repetition model that aims to bring a card back while you still have about a 90% chance of recalling it. Sayling runs the model's published weights. It does not fit them to you personally, and it does not claim to.
What it does do is state the number, then let you watch it fail. Every answer's receipt says "We predicted 84% · you got it," or "· you did not." A forecast that can lose is worth more than a score that only goes up.
WHAT IS IN EACH COURSE
Ten rungs, beginner to upper intermediate: A0.1 through B2.2, on the CEFR scale.
German · 3,046 words · 6,855 sentences · 74 dialogs
Spanish · 3,111 words · 6,859 sentences · 60 dialogs
French · 2,785 words · 6,420 sentences · 52 dialogs
Italian · 3,102 words · 6,844 sentences · 52 dialogs
Each course also carries about 140 grammar lessons and over a thousand exercises, delivered as one rule and two examples in the round where you first need them. The grammar section is for looking things up, never homework.
TEN WAYS TO MEET THE SAME WORDS
Cards, Echo, Speaking, Listen, Match, Blanks, Grammar, Dialogs, Sounds and Topics.
THE VOICE
Every sentence in the course has its own recording. A card whose recording is not on your phone is not dealt: nothing drops to your phone's built-in text-to-speech in the middle of a round. The recordings you need at the start install with the app; the rest come down as a one-time language pack.
PRIVATE, WITH ONE NAMED EXCEPTION
No account. No email. No analytics, no tracking, no third-party SDKs. Your progress is a file on your phone. Grading happens on your phone. The app contains no code that can upload anything.
The exception is Apple's, and the app names it before asking for the microphone: on iPhones that can transcribe speech on-device, nothing leaves. On iPhones that cannot, the audio goes to Apple's speech service under Apple's policy — and nowhere else, because we run no server that could receive it.
FREE, AND WHAT PREMIUM ADDS
A0 is free forever. It is not a trial. Every card you have ever met keeps coming back on schedule whether you subscribe or not.
Finish rounds and the app lends you the level above while your run holds. Premium is what makes a level yours: it opens A1 through B2 as new material, keeps the level you earn, and downloads a recording for every sentence in the course.
Requires iPhone with iOS 17 or later. Portrait.
