This app helped me so much when I had my first clinical placement at a long term care facility. Though I’ve worked with individuals in different wheelchairs and gained brief insight into the assessment and fitting procedures through my graduate classes, I had little experience applying the knowledge in practice. Through this app, I learned a lot about the different components and types of wheelchairs and what to evaluate/assess in order to provide an adequate wheelchair and cushion. By observing my preceptor and applying the concepts to practice, I gained valuable experience providing and modifying seating systems to suit the needs of the individual. I gained a better understanding of the occupational therapist’s role in long term care – specifically, how to optimize comfort and effectiveness of the seating system, as individuals may be spending most of their day in their wheelchairs. The study cases were very beneficial, testing my knowledge using various scenarios reflecting real life practice and keeping me engaged with the learning. Overall, this was a really great resource to have on placement and allowed me to learn so much!
