Excellent app that works very well
Easy
Really easy to navigate and full of useful information. A must for travellers.
Not quite perfect
The Self Guide app which came with our travelling booked through Trailfinders was a great companion in Japan. The instructions for how to transfer between different trains and buses were clear, but had two important errors.
First, in transferring from Shinagawa to Shibuya, the app said we could take any Yamanote line train. In fact, this is a circular line, and you need to take the right direction, or it will take you much longer. At the time of writing, the correct trains leave from Platform 3 at Shinagawa.
Second, on our way to Hakone Hotel from Odawara, the app told us to catch the Number 3 bus. There is no such bus. Route H leaves from Stand 3, and took us to the hotel, but Route R would have been a much better bet, as it is an express service - Route H was 90 minutes on very twisty roads. I don’t know which Stand is used by Route R at Odawara, but the information needs to be revised.
With these two fairly small but easily corrected criticisms, we found the app excellent.

Works really well.
Very easy use
Helpful but uneven
On our visit to Japan, the self guide app was particularly useful on days we were travelling between cities. The information was clear and precise, and fitted with timetables at train and bus stations.
Information on the hotels was also really useful and, coupled with Google maps, meant we found our hotels easily, whether on foot, by shuttle or on public transport.
The information on restaurants and places to visit was less useful. In the latter case, perhaps because we had planned quite carefully what we wanted to do, though advice that certain places, such as the Naoshima galleries were better booked in advance would have been useful. We found walks in LO Japan and on GPSMycity provided better suggestions on what to see and do.
We did not find the restaurant section much use at all. It did not seem tailored to the area we were staying in and it was hard to match names to places. Additionally, two of our group are vegetarian, and the app had no filter that helped them find appropriate places.

Excellent Travel App
This App was provided to us by our travel company for our trip to Japan.
Brilliant! It took all the worry away for us (from being in a country where you can’t read the language or even guess at it. Although Japan has brilliant systems in place which do help you pick up quite quickly how the travel networks function. If only the rest of the world could follow their example!

A real asset
Great to have this interactive app as a back up to the hard copy information supplied for our trip to Japan

Fantastic app that works in real time from any location. Full of suggestions for eating, visiting etc from where you are. Very impressed.
Really useful app
Very useful app to help as a reminder for train departure and arrival times, train numbers and track details, as well as directions to help get to hotels. The guide is a useful pointer to help with identifying some of the better known and less-well known things to see. The link to train time tables is also useful. The fact that it’s offline for most aspects is a good thing. Use the guide as a start point to help you.

Revolutionary!
Absolutely LOVED using this app! It made my self-guided tour of Japan far easier than it otherwise would have need, and the day-by-day feature is especially useful. The only improvement I’d make would be the integration of a ‘tickets and vouchers’ wallet where the tickets for each day appeared there, ready for use.

Good overview for the trip, sometimes covers too wide an area from your location, but that would depend on your access to transport.
Self guide app - okay but could be better
The app was good for the information about the holiday we had booked eg hotel addresses, finding the hotel, details of visits and tours we had booked etc.
Our agent was very responsive to queries and for adding additional locations into the app.
We however found the information about “attractions” in the areas we were visiting was very limited, out of date and not as local to our position as we had hoped. The app would be so much better if this information was more comprehensive and more locally relevant.

Using the app made things so easy and meant that we could get around on our own without the need for a guide.

The App offers many suitable options and features for the next Destination.
Best app ever
The Trailfinders app has been invaluable. We have used it every day while touring Japan. It was great having our itinerary and customised itinerary. Amazing
