Disappointed

I was very excited to download this. Imagine my disappointment when I download it and figure out there is an age limit. If you are going to do stuff like that at least put it in your advertising so people don’t get their hopes of finding a safe space up and then have it taken away again.

I don’t know

It won’t let me make a account and it says something about the age but I’m 20

Review

I would rate Selfsea a 5/5. I think that this app is a great place for teens to go to express their feelings in a safe and confidential way. One of the things that makes me rate this app a 5/5 is that there are monitors in all the chats to make sure that the content is appropriate, and on the topics that the group is supposed to be about. Also, the different chat topics on the app allows the users to be able to read and comment on the chats that they relate to, and they can avoid conversations that they are not interested in or could be triggering to them. I think the many different topics of chat groups can help the teens using the app feel like they have a space that they can express themselves freely, and that the people who will be reading their posts also have similar interests or struggles. This is really important for youths who do not feel like they fit in or have an accepting community. The book Working With Adolescents: A Guide For Practitioners explains that, “they might believe no one could really understand them or the events that they have endured” (Laser and Nicotera, p.4, 2021). Selfsea can help adolescents who feel this way, because the app can allow teens to share similar experiences, and feel like there are other people who understand. This app also allows teens to explore more about themselves and their identity, which is crucial during this stage in life. Laser and Nicotera say that, “...youth who identify as a minority, due to ethnicity, race, gender identity, or sexual orientation, online experiences may carry a greater weight, as a venue to explore their identity within a mainstream culture that may not have varied representations of their culture or experience” (Laser and Nicotera, p.152, 2021). Selfsea is an inclusive website for people of all identities, and it can be a welcoming place for adolescents who identify as a minority. One area of the app takes you to their website, and it provides the links to resources for many different issues. This is a great way for the adolescent users to have access to resources, and they do not need to find them on their own. Also, a feature of the app that is important is that they provide free access to 24/7 crisis counseling. All the user has to do is text a number that is provided, and someone will be able to help them through their crisis. Overall, I think that this app was very well-thought-out, and a great resource for teens who need a safe space to talk about their feelings in an anonymous way. The chat room in this app seems to be much safer than chat rooms on other apps, especially since there are people monitoring the groups and people are keeping their identity confidential. I would recommend this app to any teen who is struggling, is looking for a community, and who would benefit from having access to resources. This app serves as a healthy form of social media, which would be beneficial to many adolescents today.
