Promising but lacking

Cancelling my subscription before the trial ends. The app itself is well throughout and has a lot of potential but there is one glaring issue; book selection. Three of the first five books I tried to enter were not found. I really don’t mind the pricing model like some other reviewers but having to manually add so many books is a deal breaker for me.

Response from developer

Thanks for taking the time to write this out — search coverage is the right thing to be annoyed about, and it's what we're working on right now. Could you send us the three titles that didn't come up? hello@shelfy-app.com, just the list, nothing else needed. Our catalog is ISBN-based, and the misses tend to fall into a few specific buckets — indie and Kindle Unlimited releases that never got an ISBN, series nicknames, plain typos. Knowing which bucket yours land in tells us exactly what to fix, and we'll write back on each one. Some of them we can fix in a day. — Sasha, Shelfy

Why not free?

This app seemed like so much fun. Really sad to have downloaded it and seen you HAVE to pay a sub to even use basic features.

Subscription

Looks like a cool app but I’m not paying a subscription just to use the app I will stick to Goodreads

NOT FREE

This app will let you go through a string of questions and before it will let you actually use it, you encounter a paywall. $9.99 a month, $79.99 a year “discounted” to $38.99, or a lifetime membership of $99.99 and an offer of a 3 free day trial. I hate apps like this. Just tell me in the download price it is $100 one time purchase or something. I don’t know why I was led to believe this was a free app. I will not be doing a 3 day trail just to have to come back in a few days(which you hope I will forget) or get charged. I am so tired of every app needing a subscription. Ridiculous. Normal people can’t afford to pay for 20-100 subscriptions. That’s why people look at people who say they have Netflix or another service with bafflement and disgust. Everyone I know has gotten rid of all their subscription services because it has gotten out of hand.

Garbage

Asks for a review before you even get into the app, and then makes you either pay or get the free trial to use the app at all. If you don’t do either of those things, then you just set up your info in the app for nothing

Quite an enjoyable experience

So I’m going to write a review now so I don’t forget to, and I’ll update my review as I use the app more as it’s only been a few days.

So far I really like it. I love having the bookshelf and being able to customize it. I’ve had some issues with the sorting where I sort by authors last name and some books won’t group together but it’s really no biggie.

I think my main complaint is the discover section, which I was most excited for. I love that it tells me what book I’ve already read that the suggested book is similar to, but the description of the book doesn’t help much. Also, it just likes to show me the same books over and over which was disappointing.

Other than that, I find it’s been motivating me to read a lot more :) it’s very user friendly and aesthetically pleasing as well.

Thank you for such a thoughtful review! The author-sorting hiccup shouldn't happen — if you email us at hello@shelfy-app.com with an example, we'll dig in. And you're right about Discover repeating suggestions — we're rolling out a big improvement to recommendations right now, so it should get noticeably fresher soon. So happy Shelfy is getting you to read more :)

The best book tracker in the App Store!

I have been using Shelfy for several months now and can honestly say it’s part of my everyday routine. Not only is the app excellent and easy to use to use, it has also helped me get away from doomscrolling on social media and I’m now on a 3 month streak of reading daily. The developer is fantastic and always looking to make improvements to the app and also asks users for their input often to add features they feel are missing. I know I’ll be using Shelfy for many years to come and I’ll be buying a lifetime membership as soon as I have the funds to do so!

PAY WALL

Zero features for free. You go through the setup questions and then it makes you pay in order to even experience the app. Like full on wall. You cant do anything except answer some questions…. Woooo. Thanks for lying, this IS NOT a free app.

This is a Paid App

You’re misleading people by not mentioning that this is a pay or no go app. I wanted to see how this app worked and didn’t get a chance because you either pay or you don’t proceed. I will continue using UnCover. It’s a totally free app and it has an amazing platform.

scam

makes you give a review before you realize you have to pay no matter what

Not Free; Limited Library

I downloaded the app because I have been wishing for something like this as an alternative to Goodreads. I love the premise. I was annoyed that the entire app locks down after setup unless you agree to a 3 day free trial. The App Store said I would have to cancel 1 day before my subscription renewed, so that’s really only two days free. I can’t even explore the app without agreeing to these terms. The nail in the coffin is that when I searched a pretty popular book, it was not even in the system. I could not add the most recent book I read. What is the point of the app if I can’t even add the books I just read?
Note to the developers: I see the arguments you are making about a subscription being the only way for you to keep it ad-free. I get it. You need to make money for your hard work. Please hear from your target audience: we would like an option with ads so that we can try before committing to a subscription. If you can fix that and also make it so the books your users are reading will show up in your system, I would be willing to try again. I probably would end up subscribing, but under the current circumstances, I will be deleting the app. Best wishes on your brilliant app! Please let me know if it becomes more user friendly!

Thank you for such a thoughtful review — this is exactly the feedback that helps us improve. The book you couldn't find worries us the most: our catalog covers over 30 million titles, so that really shouldn't happen. Could you email us the title at hello@shelfy-app.com? We'd love to track down what went wrong and fix it. We hear you on wanting to explore the app before committing — we're a small team and the subscription is what keeps Shelfy ad-free, but we're thinking about how to show more value up front. Hope to hear from you!

Looking for a beautiful front end for Kindle

This app is amazing. It can import my 500+ kindle library from GoodReads into Shelfy. Then allows me sort options, custom series lists, the ability to add decor. I’m very happy to subscribe.

Thank you so much — reviews like this make our day! If you ever have ideas or run into anything, write us at hello@shelfy-app.com. Happy reading!

No free version

There’s no option to have a free version. You HAVE to pay. You get a 3 day free trial, but really, what does 3 days do…
There are other apps out there with the same idea but free.

Frustrating!

I saw this app on my instagram and thought it looked so cute! I downloaded it and the second I get into the app it’s making it pay for a free trial. No exit buttons, nothing. I can’t even get into the app without having to sign up for the free three days trial. I just want a bookshelf app!! How hard is that!!! Ridiculous, I’ve never been more frustrated.

Response from developer

Sorry the start felt so frustrating — that's not the experience we want. We're a small team and the subscription keeps Shelfy ad-free, but we hear you on wanting to look around first. Tell us what you'd want to see at hello@shelfy-app.com — we read everything.

Underrated

Im leaving this five star review because the reviews do not give it justice. I can tell a lot of development time and passion created this app. We live in a world where we expect everything to be free at the push of a button but this app cost the team time and work to make, I honestly would rather a paywall than a million ads.

Thank you 💌 We'll make sure now to put even more effort into making Shelfy the best app for book readers.

I don’t hate it

I love the idea. I love having a cute visual shelf. I can’t reorder the books in the way I want. Even when I drag the books it just takes whatever the first book on the shelf underneath and moves it to the shelf I want instead. Please fix this bug asap!

Response from developer

Thanks for sticking with us! We've rebuilt shelf drag & drop from scratch to fix exactly this — make sure you're on the latest version. If books still land on the wrong shelf after updating, please email hello@shelfy-app.com and we'll get it sorted.

no free option for me, no potential sale for you

i mean seriously wtf

GAVE ME ANXIETY

The inability to edit details or genres or categories makes this app a complete flop.

Having dozens of books “uncategorized“ without the ability to add a genre is a huge letdown.

Just cause for anxiety.

Tricks you into reviewing

I downloaded it and before I could even use it, it asked me to rate the app with five stars and review it. This was all during set up and after I rated it, then it moves me to a page on how much I had to pay. I just am getting rid of the whole app and changing my rating from five to one star because it felt very much like they’re tricking people into rating five stars so that more people download the app when you haven’t even gotten to use the app yet

Response from developer

You're right, and we're sorry — asking for a rating during setup, before you've seen everything including pricing, isn't fair to you. We're rethinking when that prompt appears. Thanks for calling it out.

Not free, don’t bother

I guess I should have read the reviews before downloading. Like many other one stars, I got too excited for this app and spend a good 10-15 minutes setting up the app only to get to the end and get prompted to subscribe. If this app actually had a free version, I wouldn’t have been as upset. But not telling anyone your app required a subscription to be useable is horrible marketing. Again, there is no free version. This app REQUIRES you have a subscription to use it. A free trial you cancel anytime is not the same thing. I wouldn’t bother wasting your time unless you can afford the extra subscription fee and are willing to pay it. Such a shame that an app with so much promise fools people into being hopeful and excited- especially those on a budget who can’t afford those extra few dollars a month.

Response from developer

We're sorry you spent 10–15 minutes setting up before seeing the price — that's on us, and we're working on making pricing clear earlier in the flow. Shelfy is subscription-based (it's what keeps the app ad-free), and the trial is there to test everything, but we hear that it's not the same as a free tier. Thanks for the honest write-up.
