Client-side app performance desperately needs help

As far as I know, Skiff has some of the best privacy available amongst email providers. However, client side app performance borders on or is essentially unusable.

On both desktop and mobile, there is is a significant amount of lag (i.e, I type a string or a sentence, and can see the characters be inputted as if watching a replay) for the workload to available system performance. Whatever Skiff is doing in the doing in the background turns normal text input into a slideshow of what I expected to type. It makes even short email exchanges take disproportionately longer than necessary.

I will revisit this review when the performance is improved, but until then, this app is hard to recommend for all but the most private people, and they most likely will want to find another solution.

Love Skiff, their apps, and their approach to privacy

I was recently with a competitor of privacy related email services and was unhappy with the loading of apps, being logged out of apps, etc and was looking for another solution. I happened to find a comment on Reddit that mentioned Skiff. I decided to give the free tier a shot. 24 hours later I was all in, switched over my custom domain, and went all in with Skiff.
Their team is SUPER responsive and active on Reddit to answer questions, their apps open quickly and run smoothly, and I couldn't be happier with the ecosystem they are creating.
They are constantly rolling out updates and improving their product almost daily. You guys rock!

Quite possibly the best

So much better than being stuck in the endless web of Google’s seemingly never ending highway of off-ramps which only lead back to Google’s fast paced so-called freeway to Googleville.

I’m using skiff and proton for all of my communication of importance. I’m partial to, and fond of skiff due to the ease of use coupled with sustained customer support and engagement. They offer bonuses and give info freely. Huge fan of skiff soon becoming my yacht. 5*

So far so good!

Google and their products have just become too intrusive for my liking so been looking for an alternative to tryout and stumbled upon Skiff. Read some reviews, talked to a couple of tech-minded friends and have chosen to start my gentle migration away from google, to a new home with Skiff. So far, pretty great and no real complaints or problems I e encountered. So for that reason, why not 5 stars?!

Heading into the right direction!

I love the Skiff products!
They already have a great suite of apps and release updates on a regular basis. They also really listen to user feedback
I have to say that there’s much room for improvement, though… You can feel that this is a startup that is just getting started because of some features missing and some UX that is not yet mature.

Amazing

The app is simple and beautiful. It’s a work in progress, but the company is very active on Reddit and Discord and is constantly listening to and implementing customer feedback. They’re improving their service week by week, sometimes even day by day. I’ve officially moved away from and transferred all other email services to Skiff. I’m happy to support their continued development. Their free tier makes other competitors like Tutanota and ProtonMail look like hot garbage.

Much Needed and Appreciated!!

I love what Skiff is doing with their creation of the Skiff suite of apps. In today’s environment privacy and security is one of the most important things needed. Privacy and security use to be protected and respected. Not so much now.

I have started using the Skiff suite of apps and I have no complaints at the moment. Keep up the good work and please never compromise on security.

Secure applications with quality work

Since the beginning skiff has set a high bar on what it is doing with its apps. They continue to work on enhancing the product weekly and show that they are growing in understanding of what the world needs now in document sharing, communication and privacy. They take very calculated approaches to all they do. At their current pace Skiff is on par with some of the best privacy focused applications in the game, so if you’re on the fence give them a try. It’s worth it.

Lots of potential

Skiff is definitely lining up to compete with the big boys. It is simple to use and I like the fluid note taking application in Drive. What I would like to see is sending encrypted emails much like that in Proton Mail. Proton will allow users to password protect and set message expiration, both of which are really useful.

The free version of Skiff is generous with 10GB to start. I highly recommend trying.

Perfect Alternative for Secure Mail

I used google for a long time and got tired of their privacy practices never improving. I then moved to ProtonMail, which I enjoyed for a time, but a subpar interface and horrible search function forced me to look elsewhere. I ran into Skiff mail and I am totally sold. Their search is nearly as good as googles and their clean, simple interface helps reduce sensory overload. I highly recommend them as an email provider.

Literally a godsend

Seems too good to be true frankly - even with their free plan you get a few aliases in addition to your main account email. Considering how privacy is a commodity more and more these days I’m mega thankful for their services.

Also would really argue against those saying tHeYrE sTiLl iN bEtA - personally speaking that typically implies an app has bugs that need patching constantly and to expect a laggy app.

I’d say they’re Forsure improving….! Integrating features and just making it a smoother layout. Idk I love em’ - makes life easier with the Alias mailboxes in case you need one for work + one for sketchy sites + etc.

I’d argue they’re a couple notches above ProtonMail frankly.

Promising, but room for improvement

In general, this is a great alternative for someone seeking to break their connections to the “Googlesphere”. The document editor and calendar features aren’t quite at feature parity, but the frequent updates give me hope.

I found migrating from my personal (non-exchange/gmail) email server somewhat cumbersome, so I would hope the team adds some documentation there to make it easier to onboard. Fortunately, I was able to import EML files manually, but it took longer than I had hoped. Perhaps there’s an opportunity to enable uploading emails via ZIP instead of individually-exported emails.

Aside from this, I hope they permit the exportation of encryption keys and the adding of PGP signing in the future. Very good overall, with a competent team at the helm.

Great start

I’m a long time proton user since 2014 and Skiff is off to a great start. The apps feel very modern and polished. There are still some bugs (more with the desktop version) but doesn’t deter too much from the user experience. I paid for the year, and having unlimited aliases with your own domain is a plus. You can set catch-all, and if you need to respond, just create the corresponding aliases. For now, I’ll still use proton as my main personal email, but Skiff is my gsuite alternative with Pages. Wish it had more label colors. I usually use about 20 labels. Side note, wish calendar had the ability to label multiple calendars.

Great app

"Skiff is a great mail app that is easy to use and secure. I love the fact that I can access my mail from anywhere, and that my data is encrypted. I would definitely recommend Skiff to anyone looking for a new mail app."

Here are some of the things I love about Skiff:

Easy to use: The interface is clean and simple, and it's easy to find what you're looking for.
Secure: Skiff encrypts all of your mail, so you can be sure that your data is safe.
Accessible: You can access your mail from anywhere, as long as you have an internet connection.
Overall, I'm really happy with Skiff and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a new mail app.

Giving Proton a run for their money

Skiff has come a long way in the past 1+ year. Skiff Mail's UI on iOS has gotten a lot smoother and more customizable. The release of additional Skiff apps has positioned Skiff to be a solid competitor to Proton. I'm really excited to see what else Skiff cooks up in the coming months and years - the pace of developing and releasing new features is really impressive!

Improving Every Day

Skiff is an amazing project for privacy but most privacy projects lack the revenue and resources needed to build apps that rival competitors.

Skiff continues to pioneer and improve app design and user experience for me from the web app to the phone app. I’ve already moved much of my digital content to their platforms. 10/10, recommend.

So far so good

It’s still early stages but they’re growing so fast and fixing all those tiny issues in every update that spring up in early builds. The difference in the iOS app from just 6 months ago is night and day. Can’t wait to see where they are a year from now at this pace.

Great for business

Incredibly responsive support team ready to work with you to resolve issues directly within a 24hr period. I use skiff for my businesses as I handle sensitive financial documents and have a duty to secure them. Skiff is the perfect solution for this and I advise my clients using unsecured emails to sign up for a free account so our communications are completely secure.

Skiff is the beginning of infinity…

…for a whole new paradigm of liberty. No one, no where, anytime can take one’s thinking from their mind. Now with Skiff Mail when I decide to share the contents of MY organic-mind-memory I can do so with profound trust in an ecosystem of end-to-end-encryption on MY devices where MY thoughts are stored in silicon-memory under MY control. These are early days of an emergent level of WWW utility that Sir Tim Berbers-Lee had envisioned, but has failed to deliver with his Solid Project. Thank you to Sequoia, Andrew and Jason.
